The audition date was set.
On Dec. 4, students at Alexander Hamilton High School in Elmsford, N.Y., would have the chance to flaunt their vocal chops with the hopes of landing a role in the drama clubs highly anticipated spring musical: Disneys Tarzan.
But just days before the scheduled tryouts, administrators announced a change of plans. Instead of Tarzan, the Westchester County high school would be putting on a musical adaptation of William Shakespeares Twelfth Night.
The reason for the abrupt change? Two parents complained about racism. The concerns were over the original story line behind Tarzan of the Apes, Elmsford Union Free School District Superintendent Marc P. Baiocco told the Journal News, referencing Edgar Rice Burroughss story, which was first published in 1912.
Baiocco added that the parents were also troubled by the possibility that nonwhite students would appear as apes onstage. According to state education data, the district that includes Alexander Hamilton serves a diverse student population. More than 50 percent of students are Hispanic or Latino and about 23 percent are black or African American.

Good on those parents for being involved in their school’s activities.
A high school in our area performed “Snow White and the Seven Dwarves” last month. I was shocked it got passed the PC nannies.
Easy fix. Get 50 parent stories to object to the 2 parents kids f’ing up the entire school for everyone and demand that the principle kick them out! When he objects, all 50 get lawyers and sue to school district.
They banned vending machines at work for being homophobic because they only accepted straight dollar bills.
I see urban kids walking around in SHOES.
I am shattered.
Why are they culturally appropriating Western garb..?
MAKE them take the Demeaning Costume Shoes off..!
Twelfth Night has racist views about cannibals..
Doubtfire is one of my favourite comedies. Really tickles me. Williams was at his best in that one.
Using phones & computers...riding in cars...
Plus Malvoleo wears yellow tights?
If they found a black student to play Tarzan the Ape Man, would that be better ... or worse?
The parents were afraid black students would appear as apes? Maybe its the parents who are racists.
The Dwarves just haven’t learned how to play the victim card—yet.
Then we can move on to important things—like eye color. ;-)
I’ve got the first Johnny Weismuller “Tarzan the Apeman” (1933) on DVR
One of those movies that definitely would not be made today, in its original form
Not just the stock documentary native footage they interspersed throughout the film, but the way he made his moves on Jane, and her succumbing to them
so the parents would rather have their kiddies act out a play featuring a woman dressed and acting as a ‘man’
such sexually confused parents need psychiatric counseling and maybe their kids should be taken into foster care ?
just kidding a bit
but still.... the 12th night play is patently questionable on its content
Ungawa!
They banned vending machines at work for being homophobic because they only accepted straight dollar bills.
= = =
So three dollar bills were rejected?
Tarzan the monkey man.
