China’s electric car sales slump, squeezing automakers
Associated Press ^ | December 10, 2019 | Joe McDonald

Looking for a new car, Yang Zhibo considered an electric but balked at prices that are thousands of dollars higher after Beijing wound down multibillion-dollar subsidies that made China the biggest market for the technology.

The 27-year-old employee of a beverage distributor picked a gasoline-powered Chevrolet instead.

“I am afraid the technology is not mature and the price is too high,” Yang said.

China’s leaders are promoting electric cars to help transform the country into a creator of profitable technologies, but sales are stalling as thousands of buyers make a similar choice.

That is squeezing automakers that are spending heavily on development as regulators shift the burden to them by imposing mandatory sales quotas. The wrenching transition is revealing the difficulty of luring mainstream buyers to a fledgling, expensive technology. …

Of course 99% of China's electricity is coal fired..and we're not talking about "clean" coal...we're talking the cheapest, dirtiest coal.

I've been to China...several times. The clearest day I ever saw there was 10 times worse that the worst day I ever saw in the LA Basin, the Tri-State Area (NYC) or the Ruhr Valley (Germany's industrial heartland).

Limited range. Hours to “fill up”. High cost of ownership. And, apparently quite hazardous if involved in a collision.
Other than that...

I own a diesel that can go 800 highway miles on a full tank.I've done it twice. I can fill it up in about 4 minutes at any one of about 30,000 stations coast-to-coast.

I wouldn't own an EV if you gave it to me.

The Party could never have a Dinah Shore.

Exactly. I can refuel and be good for 400+ miles and it takes about 10 minutes. I suppose EV ‘s are good for daily commute.

This proves that electric vehicles cannot compete with ICE unless you subsidize them heavily.

Currently, Pelosi/Schumer are scheming to extend and increase US subsidies for electric vehicles....mostly benefitting the wealthy who buy Teslas, Porsche and BMW electrics.

Most of these tax rebates go to California....go figure.

I’ve always wondered how practical a battery powered car is up here, in Minnesota. Temperatures around -20. With heaters and defrost running at full blast. Stuck in traffic. Spinning your wheels on black ice. I bet you’d get about 40 miles out of a charge. And if that things conks-out, you’re dead in 20 minutes.

I know my neighbor had a Chevy Bolt last year. It’s no longer in his stable. Replaced by a Silverado.

I’m glad someone got the Dinah Shore reference.

She would be eliminated by the party elite.

Every US car manufacturer is running full speed into the wood chipper of electric vehicles.

Rebates in the US are ending. Democrats hope to extend them and increase them because that is the only way electric vehicles will sell against ICE (internal combustion engine).

Most of the rebates go to the wealthy for vehicles above $70,000 in price and should be unnecessary.

However, as US auto manufacturers chase this wet dream, they will spend billions for no return. Their only hope is a Democratic administration, House and Senate that can mandate and subsidize electrics, like they do in Europe.

I’m with you on that one. The electric vs internal combustion vehicle contest was over in the early 1920’s.

Technology marches on. Many electric cars are better/cheaper than many gasoline cars. Soon, most electric cars will be better/cheaper than most gasoline cars.

There was a time when you could argue for steam power.

The one major hurdle I’m watching is heating the compartment in cold weather. They’ll have to come up with something to sell cars in the northern half of the USA.

There are few things so nice on a cold day as when the free heat starts pouring out.

Electric car technology is as old as steam car technology. NYC even had charging stations all around for Baker Electrics. One could say that is is folly to argue for an anachronism, and it is speculation to think that electrics will be cheaper and/or better than Otto-cycle internal combustion engine cars. If the technology becomes mature enough through the private sector to become competitive, then let buyers vote with their feet as the cliché goes.

As for steam power, Abner Doble ought to have been more business-minded and stopped trying to “improve” something that was workable and could be mass-produced, sold for and maintained for competitive pricing versus Otto-cycle cars, even with the advantage given to the Otto-cycle industry by the electric starter. A practical steam car coming out at the right time, especially when the infrastructure for road steam vehicle maintenance was more widespread than that for Otto-cycle vehicles, could have made the technology widespread even worldwide.

Docking a ship in winter in Alaska and gathering around the warm steam winch was a relief. Electric/hydraulic winches, not so much.

Technology marches on.

Very true.

Many electric cars are better/cheaper than many gasoline cars.

Depends on how one defines "better"...or "cheaper" for that matter.

Soon, most electric cars will be better/cheaper than most gasoline cars.

That could eventually come to pass...particularly if huge taxes (e.g.,"carbon taxes") are enacted. But again, define "soon".Add to that the Rat Party's promise to bankrupt the coal and nuclear plants and the question becomes "will we have enough juice to recharge 20 million huge batteries every day?"
