A Brexit Party MEP was left embarrassed today when he asked a fellow British MEP what experience she had in economics - only to be told in fact she is a professor of the subject.
Green Party MEP for the South West Molly Scott Cato drew laughter and applause as she pointed out to Robert Rowland, the Brexit Party MEP for the South East, that she in fact is a professor of economics.
Mr Rowland asked in the EU Parliament today: "I'd just like to ask Ms Scott Cato what empirical proof she has that the end of the transition period when we will be leaving the EU hopefully on a Canada-Plus style trade deal, will result in a cliff edge, when as far as I am aware she does not have any degree in economics or maybe she has some business experience that will give some empirical proof that that will be the case.
"So I was wondering whether you could answer that question why you are so certain that the UK will suffer as a result?"
MEP Ms Scott Cato, who was born in Stroud, replied: "Obviously you haven't been paying much attention to my CV, because I was and I remain a professor of economics."
This was greeted by laughter and applause in the Parliament.
She added: "I also have expertise in trade policy and have been studying the trade negotiations from the beginning. I rely on the other expertise of other trade experts, all of whom have said it takes much longer than the time available to negotiate a treaty and the likelihood is if we go ahead with Boris Johnson's deal we will end up in exactly the same crisis facing a no deal Brexit at the end of 2020."
Though it’s great to see an arrogant member of the Green Party exposed, I wish to point out that a very significant number of people with PhDs in economics know little about true economics in the real world. I would, though, include all Green Party members in that group. If they knew anything about real world economics, they wouldn’t be in the Green Party.
Is everything that happens in economics in England as “unexpected” to their economists as American economics are to economists here in America?
I think you got the players backwards. Read it again.

He should have replied, “I rest my case. You don’t have any experience in economics”.
And Paul Krugman won the Nobel Prize.
Paul Krugman case in point.
A garbage degree. Big deal.
You basically said what I was about to say. She has a degree, but she really has no real knowledge. For when he knowledge is executed it brings adverse results, not positive results.
I kid you not! I wish I had a recording of it.
Ten bucks says that the "Green" person also believes in "tree people" and "fish people".
She supposedly has a degree in economics from Boston college but doesn't know sh*t about economics.
It is funny, but like a lot of Freepers are fond of pointing out, there are still a lot of idiots with Ph.D.s in economics, particularly from designer schools.
Like Austan Goolsbee, Christina Roehmer, Paul Krugman, and a host of other Keynesian types, not to mention the mathematical posers.
Professor or not, it doesn't mean she has any understanding or experience of economics.
You’re right, but the comment works just fine against the media, too.
yes
and those that can’t do teach
Technically, her degress is in “Philosophy, Politics, and Economics”, and she seems to be a “green economist”. Her training does not seem to be in actual monetary economics.
And she was a professor, but not of monetary economics, she’s a professor of “Strategy and Sustainability”>
So he probably was correct that she has no real degree in what she is talking about. And she definitely never worked in business, which was his other claim.
But she’s a greenie, so the news will all pretend that her non-answer was in fact horribly clever.
Many years ago, I read a quote from a Stanford economist who said,The only purpose served by economic forecasting is to lend credibility to astrology.

The same could be said of any number of ‘experts.’
