It probably looked good on paper, but the plastic bag ban making its way through the State Legislature, as it is now, is not the planet-friendly panacea environmentalists proclaim, and will hurt the bottom line of consumers and small businesses.
As the Heralds Mary Markos reported, under the bill, customers would pay at least 10 cents for a recycled paper bag at check out. The aim: to keep nasty plastic from polluting our environment.
While Massachusetts may not be able to tackle the proliferation of plastics worldwide, we can take concrete action at home, Senate President Karen Spilka said.

Lets plop our nasty germy haven’t been washed in two years totes on the counter so the cashier can get even more germy hands and pass super bugs onto other customers’ food.
At 10 cents per bag, it might be instructive to learn how much of this cost goes to the government. And, for that matter, how many politicians pushing the ban invested in those companies making the replacement bags.
My town banned that bags. We had to buy bags at the store and remember to bring them with you every time you go to the store. Its a pain in the ass.
So, now we have to bring bags. We usually have to bag them ourselves. There are places with self check out.
I think eventually we will go to the produce section and they will just hand us seeds.
Environment has nothing to do with it.
Money grab.
Ban here goes in effect next month. But I see 2,000 High-Density Shopping Bags, 8" x 16", White, $23.11 with Free delivery at Walmart online.
That is less than a penny a piece is it not? Thank God for low prices in competition.
My clarification: In CA, the price to consumers for a paper bag is ten cents.
