(CBS) Do women who have an abortion risk their mental health?
A provocative new study shows that women who have an abortion face an increased risk for mental health problems including substance abuse, anxiety, and depression.
"Results indicate quite consistently that abortion is associated with moderate to highly increased risks of psychological problems subsequent to the procedure," the authors wrote in the study, published in the September 1 issue of the British Journal of Psychiatry.
For the study, researchers analyzed data on 877,000 women, including 164,000 who had an abortion. They found women who had an abortion experienced an 81 percent increased risk for mental problems.
Women who had an abortion were 34 percent more likely to develop an anxiety disorder, 37 percent more likely to experience depression, 110 percent more likely to abuse alcohol, 155 percent more likely to commit suicide, and 220 percent more likely to use marijuana.
Nearly 10 percent of the problems could be attributed to abortion, the authors concluded.
"There are in fact some real risks associated with abortion that should be shared with women as they are counseled prior to an abortion," Dr. Priscilla Coleman, professor of human development and family studies at Bowling Green State University, told the Daily Telegraph.
About 827,000 women have an abortion in the U.S. each year.
Previous research hasn't found a definitive link between an abortion and a woman's mental health.
In 2008, the American Psychiatric Association charged a task force to review scientific evidence on the link between abortion and mental health. They acknowledged women may experience sadness, grief, depression, and anxiety following an abortion, but could not find evidence abortions - and not other factors - caused these effects.

On that note WELL DUH!! The lamestream media just now catching on?
Paging Captain Obvious. It takes a concerted coordinated effort to convince people that babies can be murdered for convenience without spiritual penalty.
Sin does tend to deteriorate health in a person.
A guilty conscience will do that.
God put women on this earth to make babies and give pleasure to men. Neanderthal? Yes, but there’s truth to it. I’ll say this: A woman who has given up an unwanted child for adoption will go to sleep every night crying. A woman who has had an abortion will cry at her convenience. The woman who knows there is her own flesh and blood walking around out there will know she did the right thing because we’ll all be there for her.
The abortion industry has muddied the waters by claiming that preexisting mental problems lead to the behavior that results in women having abortions, thus making abortion a symptom rather than a cause.
I think the relation between abortion and mental health is more complex. Women of precarious mental status would be more likely to engage in risky, irresponsible behavior, but also the strain of living with the fact that one has had ones child brutally murdered for essentially no reason will cause mental instability. Alyssa Romano seems to be a case of the latter: her repulsive over-the-top advocacy of abortion, as it turns out, is fueled by the fact that she is trying to suppress guilt over her own abortions.
It is already too late to counsel a woman when she is about to have an abortion. The counseling and education should have taken place long before she chose to become pregnant. Planned Parenthood has a lot to do with the fact that so many women believe that the choice to have a child can wait until they are already pregnant.
There’s more. It was in the NE Journal of medicine that stated that breast cancer would be a side effect of this procedure to women down the road. May have been 20 years ago. The left had a cow over that one. Pregnancy was good for a woman’s physical health so the neanderthal in me says every woman should bring at least one child into the world no matter how screwed up she is. Let the rest of us deal with the consequences. ‘Preventive’ problems should be confined to the 5 time deportee who killed Kate Steinle.
correlation ~ causation
Abortion is taking a problem and sweeping it under the rug. Consequences are different.
There are many, many factors contributing to that in this society. But I agree, abortion is a major one.
They had what I described at the time as a serious emotional hangover, following their abortions.
One lady was unable to return to the city where the abortion was done, because she kept reliving the sound of the suction of the baby parts passing through the machine.
Mothers know it is a BABY and NOT "just a clump of cells".
“On that note WELL DUH!! The lamestream media just now catching on?”
I think CBS is starting to catch on. Now they are hiring Katherine Herridge? If I had to out a tinfoil hat on I would say that the network is going to move far away politically from the other networks.
Every woman should bring one child into the world. I’ve posted that. Married women should bring in 2. STABLE couples should have 3+ kids. I’m thinking along the lines of 10 year marriages where the wife stays at home. Collectively we could help the large families as long as we don’t spend money prosecuting and jailing Ms. Steinle’s killer. Steinle will not bring a child into the world sadly.
I was thinking similar about Herridge and CBS...change is in the wind
Post abortion depression. Probably a biological angle to it as well.
Large families(healthy) will allow our society to grow. Who wants to be around nothing but 50-year-olds?
Uh, after she gives pleasure to men and she gets knocked up, does the guy have any responsibility in your Neanderthal way?
Because it was posted in september of 2011. Anyway, it’s worth repeating.
A irl I knew who wasn’t affected was already way crazy so actually i don’t know if it affected her. Or she was so crazy that it didn’t matter. She had at least 3 abortions. Haven’t seen her in 30 years.
Another girl who was pretty unstable from years of being molested had an abortion. Again, she’s kind of out there already so don’t know if it affected her.
Other girls I knew, who were normal, it affected them, some in VERY bad ways.
One who didn’t know I knew she had an abortion would always cry and tell me God was punishing her for something. It didn’t end well for her at all.
Those who were messed up by having abortions were Christian, Jewish, atheist...
That’s my personal experience with women who have had abortions.
Oh wait, if you want to get sick to your stomach there’s the couple I knew that had sex while the woman was pregnant without a condom because she couldn’t get pregnant while pregnant and they were going to abort the baby anyway down the line.
SMH
Not surprising when they murder a human being growing in their womb.
The Progressives will say it’s not the abortion per se that has a negative effect on women’s mental health, it’s the shaming by antiquated patriarchal Christians. Therefore, you are killing women with your anti women’s power health choice freedom views, thus you should be legislated out of existence.
