A Pittsburgh activist who regularly organizes protests concerning racism in the city was charged Wednesday with setting fires in Pizza Milano — the Uptown pizza shop that drew ire in 2018 after an interaction between a manager and a black woman — and Cafe Milano Downtown.
Nicole Jo Dawson, 36, of Beechview, is accused of walking into Pizza Milano on Fifth Avenue shortly after 10 p.m. Tuesday with a beer bottle that had a cloth sticking out the neck. Ms. Dawson lit the cloth on fire, then walked into the kitchen and threw the bottle into a fryer filled with cooking oil, according to a criminal complaint.
As she left the restaurant, she told a manager, “I want to see that place on fire,” according to the complaint, which said investigators used surveillance footage to identify Ms. Dawson.
About 11 p.m. Tuesday, Ms. Dawson went into Cafe Milano on Sixth Street and lit a fire in a trash can in the women’s bathroom, according to a second complaint. A manager there said he saw Ms. Dawson go into the bathroom, stay a short while and then leave.
Shortly after she left the restaurant, he smelled something burning and went into the bathroom to find a fire in a trash can. The manager extinguished the fire with water out and called 911.

One failsafe phenomenon: any story on crime by ‘urban’ denizens will have the comments disabled.
She was fine with the idea of setting fire to a business and potentially killing people in the process. In fact, she was so at ease with the idea of death and destruction she elected to set another fire.
There is no acceptable excuse here, and there is no reason this person should walk free among us.
