Middleweight boxer Patrick Day has died days after suffering traumatic brain injuries in a brutal knockout loss, his promoter said Wednesday.
Day, 27, was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital in Chicago following his Saturday fight with Charles Conwell on the undercard of Oleksandr Usyk's victorious heavyweight debut against Chazz Witherspoon.
"On behalf of Patrick's family, team, and those closest to him, we are grateful for the prayers, expressions of support and outpouring of love for Pat that have been so obvious since his injury," promoter Lou DiBella said in a statement. "He was a son, brother, and good friend to many. Pat's kindness, positivity, and generosity of spirit made a lasting impression with everyone he met."

I watched Boom Boom’s match against Doo Koo Kim i believe it was- I was late for youth group at church because of the match- that evening wasn’t a good evening- it depressed me that the fella died- as it owudl anyone- I remember thinking “Come on, get up- get up!” but he never did- Felt terrible for Mancini and Kim
Looks like it was a pretty good fight — though maybe the referee should have stopped it earlier?

it’s all dangerous0- but so what I say to the critics- all sports practically are dangerous- or many are- but the ratio of deaths is still very very low- jobs such as farming, construction, oil well work, etc are far more dangerous
I saw the clip on Instagram. That hit would have cleaned anyone’s clock.
I grew up with Ray, he went to high school at Chaney, we used to watch him in golden gloves, he would be at the Fireplace every Friday night for fish dinner.
terrible what happened to him it effed up his head.
Doesnt anyone over fifty Id guess.....it was the only major boxing fatality I recall from my youth
Bean is good.....sleeping at Golden Corral
I am of the opinion that boxing gloves have done a lot of damage to the sport. Gloves are designed to protect the hands from injury. When your hands are protected, first with tape and then gloves, you can throw harder punches and target the head with far less fear of hand injury.
I am of the opinion that going back to bare knuckle boxing will significantly reduce the death and brain injury rates.
He clearly was having balance issues before the final blow that “knocked him out”... honestly looked to me he was going to fall over without the shot, was basically staggering to keep balance, something wasn’t right.... Something was wrong before he fell, but its easy to see that in retrospect, in real time the Ref probably didn’t notice that he should have called it.... Damage to me looked like it was done before the final shot.
:)
I have to admit that is a very good point.
Ive never understood how boxing and mma style sports havent come under more public examination like the NFL
It appeared to me that the first time he went down he looked out of it, but he said okay to the ref, sad.
It does every once in a while. Last time, I think, was the “Ali Act”. I know someone tried to extend that to MMA a couple of years ago.
Awful. RIP.
