according to duckduckgo...
"Columbus Day, which is on the second Monday of October, remembers Christopher Columbus' arrival to the Americas on October 12, 1492. This holiday is controversial because the European settlement in the Americas led to the demise of the history and culture of the indigenous peoples."
My DNA test said about 20% Italian.
I’m 0% Italian, but I was born in Columbus, so I want in on this.
I am going to celebrate Indigenous Peoples Day.
Anyone want to volunteer for me to cut their heart out with a pre-iron age copper alloy or flint knife?
All 4 of my grandparents were from Sicily. My father’s name was Calogero (as in “A Bronx Tale”) until he went to school and they renamed him Charles.
It’s simple.
Indians lost, Europeans won.
Game over. Happy Columbus Day!
You raise some interesting points. The more I read about indigenous peoples, the less the left-wing image of them as “innocent children of nature” seems to fit.
“Savages” is an unkind word, but accurate in many cases, especially for the Aztecs and their practice of industrial-scale human sacrifice. No wonder all the tribes they oppressed were so willing to join Cortes and his conquistadores.
And by the way, I’m Polish and I always marvel at how well the Polacks and the Paisanos get along in this country — as witnessed by quite a few happy and enduring marriages in my extended family.
I’m not Italian but I love Italian food, so there’s that.
No Italian, but Happy Columbus Day!
A relative flew into Sicily on a military stopover, said it was the best food he ever had.
It is pseudo intellectual revisionism to judge people or events from another era by current fashions. One thing is true about the 16th century. If you were a conquered people virtually anywhere in the world, you knew you were conquered and you would be fortunate to merely remain alive to adapt to new realities. Conquerors, whatever their race or religion, cared little or nothing about the culture they supplanted.
Columbus was a great Italian. He was intelligent, determined, courageous, innovative, and crafty. He accomplished a great feat that changed the world. He deserves to be honored and remembered.
Oh come on... you don’t want me to cut your heart out with a pre-iron age knife to celebrate the injuns? You are nothing but a racist and oppressive patriarchal imperialist. ;-)
To be culturally sensitive I’ll use his culturally appropriate name. Happy Cristoforo Colombo Day to all.
You realize of course that Calogero is a given name peculiar to Sicily.
Italian surnames tend to be very regional — almost down to the village in some cases — and given names sometimes follow regional patterns, although to a lesser degree.
Calogero is about as Sicilian as cannoli.
My Grandfather’s birth certificate is in Italian
Happy Columbus Day!
I am part Polish and last week was Pulaski Day.
Celebrate Columbus Day with a pizza or some pasta!
While the indigenous people of Central and South America were building pyramids and commercial cities, those in North America were hunters and gatherers who lived hand to mouth. There is little evidence of progress from one century to the next. Their great leap forward came when the Spanish brought horses for them to steal. It sure beat walking as they had done for centuries.
Im 3/4 Italian about half Napolitano and a quarter Calabrese. 4th quarter a mutt of mostly British Isle mix about half of that Irish and some Viking conquerer blood mixed in.
My DNA has me with less eyetalian with a Jewish component that was never known by my family members. Of course Italy has hosted Jews since the Roman Republic.
