Your doctor is an ignoramus following the lead of the Pied Piper AMA rather than studying any valid research.

The sooner that you embrace that viewpoint, the faster the facts will find you.

I apologize, but I’m just too burned out sounding like a broken record to people who end up doing the opposite anyway. Pardon the skepticism, but if I were a gambling man I’d bet that you end up on statins anyway...

All the best. If you’re lucky, I’ll get my books published before permanent harm comes to you from what I refer to as “Statin State”...another name for a different disease.

If you’re REAL lucky at gambling, you might stumble onto a solution on your own or, better, find someone like me who’s not thoroughly-jaded by what is overwhelmingly the topic of my 4th unpublished book: Why people choose to engage in behaviors which ultimately result in unhealthful states.

After literally thousands of hours of research, study & writing, I have a fair grasp of the cause of “western lifestyle disease” and it’s far too complex for any one pill, powder, elixir or ‘diet’ to resolve.

But I think I found the solution.

I am a 65 year old woman, 5'4", 115 lbs. I run 6 miles every other day, eat a healthy diet, and lift weights twice a week. My cholesterol is 220 if I don't take statins. With them, I can get it slightly below 200. My "good" cholesterol is great but my Dr insists I keep taking Zocor. Would like to get off of it.

My husband's is 115 which sounds great but it actually bad. He is seriously depressed (bi-polar 2). Low cholesterol and depression are linked.

Our Doctor wanted the spouse and I on Statin drugs but we both suffered from joint pain as a result. We got off the statin drugs and stated taking Red Yeast Rice supplements instead. My spouse’s cholesterol dropped dramatically, mine dropped also but not as much. We haven’t noticed any side affects from the Red yeast rice supplements so we still take them. We also have been eating more Vegan type meals, lots of vegetables and very little meat & cheese. This seems to be working for us so far.

Don’t take them. The doctor wants your money.

Statins are a billion dollar industry.

They will give you dementia.

Search on you tube. Dr. From MIT

High cholesterol

Find a nutritionist and go on a diet

The cholesterol will decrease with weight loss

Why take a chance?

Any and all heart, BP and cholesterol issues need to be monitored. If you start having side effects from a med like a statin, then with the help of your doctor you try something else. I’m saying he should probably trust his doctor on this, instead of advice on FR or any other forum.

Side effects from statins? Not really. Unless you consider life saving a side effect.

***Statin drugs help lower cholesterol levels in the blood. By lowering the levels, they help prevent heart attacks and stroke. Studies show that, in certain people, statins reduce the risk of heart attack, stroke, and even death from heart disease by about 25% to 35%.***

no problem, In my case I did do research and tried diet before the more drastic medicine course and it worked for me, others of course can have different results. muy main gripe is my doctor had some kind of chart if then without even giving me the option of a less harmful course first. fortunately for me diet worked. after my research and talking to someone who had genetically high cholesterol I chose my own plan.

I have been using Lipitor then Generic version for over 30 years! (I must have been one of the first!)

Still here. No heart trouble.

High blood pressure “very well controlled” with drugs, nutrition, and diet. VWC means as long as I do those things I have “normal” blood pressure.

Type 2 Diabetes “very well controlled” with drugs, nutrition, and diet. VWC means as long as I do those things I have “normal” blood sugar levels.

Quit smoking, quit drinking (alcohol), quit sugar.

I lost 75 pounds too. My doctor is very happy with me.

Muscle side effects with statins correlate to low Vitamin D in some studies. Vitamin D council recommends minimum limits for Vitamin D should be higher. Many overweight people are Vitamin D deficient since it sequesters in body fat. As one who has had very low vitamin D and had significant weakness taking atorvastatin, I wonder if this was the cause. Check out a couple of the studies, seemed to be strong correlation. Maybe supplement with D if you have to take statins? When patient is D deficient, Dr. will prescribe megadosing D on a schedule. Vitamin D council states megadosing D is OK up to a point.

I tried 3 different stations in 2006. All gave me bad leg cramps and fatigue. Switched doctorscwhen he would not listen and tried to give me a 4th. Found a doctor who listens. Been on niacin and red rice yeast. Lost 15 pounds over the years moderate exercise and cholesterol is 197 with an HDL of 78. BP is fine.

Lots of things work as well as statins and don't go after your health too.

One animal studyTrusted Source found that pumpkin seed oil not only helped lower cholesterol, but it also had anti-inflammatory effects

from google - "Several studies have indicated that consuming up to 2 grams of phytosterols per day can lower low-density lipoproteins (LDL or "bad" cholesterol) by up to 10 percent. This amount roughly equals 1 teaspoon of phytosterol extract or one tablespoon of a spread containing phytosterols.Mar 26, 2018"

"The main conclusion is that the effective doses were between 1.5 and 3 g/day, leading to reductions between 8% and 15% in LDL-cholesterol.">

from google - "Likely Boswellia serrata, through reduction of NO generation, can protect the liver function. This research showed that Boswellia serrata supplementation has beneficial effect in augmentation of HDL and reduction of total cholesterol and LDL levels among type2 diabetic patients.Feb 4, 2014"

Treatment of diabetic patient with Boswellia serrata was caused to significant increase in blood HDL levels as well as a remarkable decrease in cholesterol, LDL, ">

Again from google - One study showed that berberine can effectively reduce cholesterol levels in hamsters fed a high-fat, high-cholesterol diet. A 2012 study using human subjects found that three 500-milligram doses of berberine a day for 12 weeks was more effective in lowering cholesterol than ezetimibe.Mar 1, 2016

I take all of these things so let me know if you need help. They are radily available on amazon and some I take every day, as does my husband.

There is really no need to take statins, if you have not tried these much healthier options first.

I was pretty sure it was something I was taking, because my HDL kept going up. Believe it or not, there is a point at which HDL can get too high. There was a study done in the last few yr that showed people above that preferred max were at risk of serious heart problems.

I was on a statin for years that worked well. Then they changed my BP meds, and had to change my statin. The new one messed me up something terrible. Incredible fatigue, light headed, etc. I stopped taking it, and all symptoms disappeared. I told my doc I was done with statins.

Why the recommendation?
My doctor wanted to put me on statins for cholesterol even though my cholesterol is a low normal....because I’m over 60 and some revised charts (probably revised with help of statin producers) say i should take them.
I told him I needed a more compelling reason to put that crap in my system...
Gotta weigh the potential risk/benefits and the risks are obvious while some of the benefits may not be.
Don’t use this as a reason - do some research on your own situation.

Two years ago my total cholesterol was 237, triglycerides 148 and LDL143. My HDL has always been excellent. I lost 20 lbs, (not really a lot) and watch my diet, to some degree, eat a lot of oatmeal. Just had blood work done and my total cholesterol dropped to 127, LDL 60, HDL 65 and triglycerides 61. I had to look twice when I saw the numbers.

Here’s the ACTUAL truth.

You know that famous line, “All Men are created equal”?

Well it’s wrong.

We are all considerably different, as are the effect drugs have on each of us. My late Dad and his late brother both were advised to take statins. Over the last 20 years of their life they went through various different ones, with various different side effects and various different results. Neither died from heart problems.

I’m 70 and take nothing. I do eat right, exercise, and have always like oatmeal. All my numbers are “slightly elevated.” I’ve told my doctor flatly, “if I die, it’s on me, not you.”

His actual response was, “You’re seventy and you’ve had no problems, I wouldn’t change a thing. I see people with numbers all over the place, with and without drugs, and with completely different results. There’s obviously no one size fits all solution.”

I’m afraid that this is just how things are. We’re all different and we all react differently. Listen to all the opinions and ideas, but in the end, everybody really has to make their own choice - and hope for the best.
