10 takeaways: Florida may have won lottery by striking out on Chip Kelly, Scott Frost [CFB Week 6]

Ten takeaways from a no-Alabama, no-Clemson weekend in college football that allowed some teams other than the winners of the last four national championships to shine. Pete Thamel has Michigan State-Ohio State covered, so I’ll deal with everything else. 1. Dan Mullen continues to be one of the best third-choice hires in recent history Florida wanted Chip Kelly. Then Florida wanted Scott Frost. It got neither, “settling” on the guy who had the best run in Mississippi State history. After beating previously undefeated Auburn 24-13 Saturday in The Swamp, Mr. Third Choice is now 6-0 this season and 16-3 since taking the job. That is a six-game improvement over the previous 19 games at Florida, under Jim McElwain. Now, let’s check in on how Kelly and Frost have done compared to their predecessors at UCLA and Nebraska, respectively.

Please allow me to sum up CFB, year in, year out. Perennially, there are about a half dozen teams that are superior to the others and these teams compete for the national championship. The remaining games and teams are basically non-consequential except for the most lonely among us.

Wolverines nasty defense forced 4 turnovers and had 8 sacks yet somehow the offense only put up 10 pts.

You give a kid a shiny bright expensive car. He looks like he can handle it but then he is driving along a country road, gets spooked by a Gator, veers off the road and gets mired in The Swamp. Nix's 3 picks, including a costly one on the UF side of the field and in the end zone, negated Auburn's defense forcing 4 fumbles. The sequence of the game was Auburn muffed a punt, Auburn's KJ Britt blast the Gator QB, Auburn's big dude Derrick Brown picks up the ball, he rumbles down the field amazingly out running some Gator players and appears to have a clear lane for a TD, then proceeds to trip and falls at the Gator 35. Nix proceeds to throw a pick. Gators are able to take advantage of the pick and score a TD.

I turned off the Michigan State v. THE Ohio State University at halftime.

And then there was only one. How did the Grunge Dogs lose to Stanford? Oregon is the Pac 12's only hope and that hope took a hit with Auburn losing.

The Auburn QB Nix defeated Auburn. He was terrible.

Okay, all credit to the Gators for their win over Auburn yesterday. But let’s not get carried away. They still have to play Georgia and if they somehow make it to the conference championship game...

Long way to go in the season yet.

True. But I will always follow and root for my alma mater.

Agreed on Chip Kelly. He’s a total failure since Oregon. Scott Frost has a much bigger rebuild than Florida. They are more than two decades past dominance and in a different conference. Recruiting is a different challenge.

Mullen can win with less talent. He may make it to the top of college football.

Chip caught lightning in a bottle at Oregon. He doesn’t have the speed the Ducks have and never will. Won ugly which is a beautiful thing.

Florida turned the ball over 8 times and somehow managed to barely come out with a win. Don’t put them Gators into the playoff picture just yet.

Mullen does look like a great hire. Too early to say Frost isn’t, or would have done just as well a UF. Florida should have no regrets. They are in a great position for the next few years.

Gators play LSU on the road next week, at night. Brutal schedule.

That’s funny. We were assured Auburn would “expose” Florida, that UF was fraudulent and didn’t deserve to be in the top 10, etc.
