Box Office: 'Joker' Dances to Record $13.3M in Previews

Previews of Warner Bros.' Joker lit up the U.S. box office on Thursday night, earning an impressive $13.3 million.

The R-rated supervillain pic, directed by Todd Phillips and starring Joaquin Phoenix, easily sets a new preview record for the month of October, besting last year's Venom ($10 million). It began screening at 4 p.m. local time.

Joker has sparked sparked headlines for its dark themes and violence, prompting theaters across the country to ramp up security and warn parents that the film isn't an ordinary superhero pic (the usual DC title card doesn't even appear in the credits).

To date, there have been no credible or specific threats made to cinemas, according to the FBI and law enforcement agencies in Los Angeles and New York. And interest in the film has only continued to increase, especially among males, who made up nearly 70 percent of Thursday's audience.

For the full weekend, Joker is expected to top the list of biggest October openings with $80 million-plus. The current champ is Venom ($80.3 million), not adjusted for inflation. Warners is being more conservative in its forecast, suggesting $75 million to $80 million for the weekend.

I’ve never before heard notices about record amounts during previews. That makes me think that this is just hype. Do not be fooled!

If the reviews are close to accurate, it’s a blockbuster masterpiece.

Depressing what depraved “icons” our godless society worships at the box office. Tragic.

The Joker hysteria is bizarre. It’s a movie that I will enjoy but the left is pure insane over this.

Slamming a superhero/villain movie as being violent and for dumb white guys ... is telling the politically incorrect fan base this is the movie for you.

They’ve also got a reason to hype the opening day stats to try to get more people in the theater this weekend despite critics blasting it.

This is very strange superhero movie in that the superhero isn’t due to show up for about two drcades. This is more likely the first supervillain movie.

Correct. Some of the critics comments are even worse.

Saw it last night. It’s not for everyone. It’s downright disturbing in parts. Otherwise a very, very good movie. Joaquin has Best Actor in the bag.

That is why I did not care for the TV series Gotham. It was all about the creation of all the Batman super-villains and was very dark. I think we were supposed to see all the evil as mildly amusing. I don't care for that kind of stuff as "entertainment". If I am going to see these evil characters, I want to see Batman kick their asses.

That's one of the reasons I like a lot of westerns. There are usually lawless types running rampant and some good men have to put them out of business and establish law and order.

I don’t think this is about the “real” joker. I think they had a movie about an introverted person who snaps and does some crazy stuff, like “Taxi Driver” but it’s not the 70s anymore and gritty character studies aren’t in vogue. So they converted it into a Joker-like character because marketing. I could be wrong, but early press led me to believe that.

Or you’re just not paying attention. The Thursday “not quite opening night” is semi new. But they have definitely been keeping track of the record. Used to be held by Venom.

After the warning to some Army base, IIRC (Fort Sill?), the media has been trying to get someone to shoot up a theater. I have no doubt. Have seen multiple TV news accounts of warnings. They want more shootings.

From the reviews of a few Freepersm it sounds like it is a boring waste of time. Very predictable they stated.

I like the direction DC is taking. Instead of trying to be like Marvel, they’re focusing on movies featuring lesser-known characters. I’ve always felt that DC’s characters were much better than Marvel.

I’ll pass on this forever. I don’t watch the Walking Dead, Game of Thrones, and the ilk. I avoid the horror genre. The admonition against a vexation of the spirit should be a no brainer.

The movies have to promoted or no one would go see them.
Who’s going to go see a movie when the reviews say this one really stinks?
