CDC case study finds deer with tuberculosis can transmit bacteria to people

he CDC is advising hunters to wear protective equipment while field-dressing deer as a result of the findings. Hunters in Michigan who submit deer heads which test positive for the bacterium could be at higher risk according to the agency.

FOX 17 News spoke with TWRA Wildlife Veterinarian Dan Grove who says there has not been a confirmed case of TB in deer in the state but overall, the basic safety advice issued by the CDC is sound. "The advice is sound in general" Grove says. "If it looks like there is an abscess in a piece of meat then you want to avoid it. You always want to be cautious handling meat until you cook it and take basic precautions like wearing gloves. Sometimes everything looks good but you might get into dressing the animal and see something."

While TB is bad, if deer get drug resistant TB this could be a nightmare. Typically, most TB in the US is ordinary, but elsewhere they are finding cases of Multi-drug-resistant tuberculosis (MDR-TB), and even some cases of extensively drug-resistant TB (XDR-TB).

Only twice have there been outbreaks of Totally-drug-resistant tuberculosis (TDR-TB), both in India, and both had 100% mortality of all infected patients.

This reminds me of a veterinary manual on meat inspection that I read once, full of gross pictures of various infected or otherwise unsuitable for consumption animal parts. Of course, I read it over lunch.

As a kid on the dairy farm in the 50s, all dairy cattle had to be TB tested and innoculated against it. I’m not surprised that deer could be carriers.

TB is more likely being spread by the illegal aliens infesting the country.

Approximately 6 million deer are harvested each year. One 77 year old hunter gets TB. 2 others maybe. Damn dangerous sport. What would I do without the CDC looking out for me?
