In light of the heavy backlash from fans and celebrities over rumors of a possible remake of The Princess Bride, What other movies stands on its on as a classic (those near perfect movies) that should not be bastardized in being redone?
1. Godfather 2. Back to the Future 3. Die Hard 4. Shawshank Redemption 5. Original Star Wars, especially Empire Strikes Back 6. Rocky
What else?
1. Flight of the Phoenix (was remade as a comedy, for Pete’s sake)
2. The Sand Pebbles (would take $150M to remake the San Pablo today and there is no Steve McQueen)
3. The Day the Earth Stood Still (horrible remake of several years ago was terrible)
xii I haven’t looked for it lately but suspect a version would be hard to find. Warren Oates was a very under rated actor that did some great stuff.
The Wild Bunch. Sam Peckinpah’s masterpiece. The best collection of Western movie stars ever assembled. They were so gritty you could almost smell the B.O. coming off of them.
Beau Geste?
I have often wondered why Hollywood never tried to make a really good Travis McGee movie. I know they tried twice but neither were very good.
What a dreadful movie.
Ditto! They shouldn't have made the first one.
Ben Hur (with Chuck Heston), 2016 remake was a PC DISASTER.
The jack@sses behind the remake forgot about the main Christian theme of the story. After all, the books title was Ben Hur, A Tale of the Christ.
The ending of the 2016 disaster had Judah and Messala riding off together with the MUSLIM sheik (Morgan Freeman) and his nomad band of many wives and family members. Forget the parts about the life, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, Judah becoming a Christian, etc.
The 2016 remake was pathetic and ridiculous.
And it was a very modest budget film.
But it didn’t deserve Best Movie at the Oscars... should have been To Kill a Mockingbird.
Yeah that’s a good one too but not as visually stunning as al Lawrence
Colbert didn’t want to do it and only agreed to three weeks’ shooting. As a result, many scenes only had one take.
Of course the Heston Ben Hur is like the 5th or 6th time they made that movie. It’s one of the ones I use in defense of remakes.
Sorry, my mistake. A remake was in the works, but thankfully the project was cancelled.
Oh good. The electronic music was so cool. I think I was 9 years old when I saw it. I had nightmares for days. Lol I even have a the model of the United Planets Federation C-57D Saucer hanging in the garage. Its huge.
Magnificent Seve.n had better music.
Did you know Ben Hur was (a long time ago) actually done as a stage play? LOL!!! They used real horses running on conveyor belts to recreate the chariot race. This was before the silent movie era. That had to have been wildly entertaining. :0)
