The Who - No Politics, Just Music (Vanity)
Vanity | 9/11/2019 | Self

Posted on 09/11/2019 7:06:25 AM PDT by mmichaels1970

Sometimes things not mentioned are worth mentioning. We see post after post of political rantings and anti-Trump blather from entertainers, musicians, etc., that put a damper or flat-out ruin what we'd hoped would be a good time.

I went to see The Who's "Moving On" concert yesterday and felt it was worth posting that there was not a SINGLE hint of anything political, anti-American, or anti-Trump anywhere throughout the event. We frequently repeat the mantra of "shut up and sing", and The Who did just that.

This post isn't meant to be a review of the show itself. You can like them or hate them. I just felt the need to put out there that there are still some events that can just be fun, without some underlying message.

It's kind of a shame that this would even be an issue that I would consider after a great night out. But with so many Hollywood/entertainment bash-fests day after day I really felt the need to give credit where credit is due and let you all know about it.

Isn’t there now only half a Who?

When I hear them in my brain and my heart, they're all still there.

If you’ve never seen “The Kids are Alright”, I highly recommend it.

I'll take you up on that. Thanks.

... there was not a SINGLE hint of anything political

I think that’s their MO. I’ve seen many interviews with the guys over the years and they have this odd professionalism about their music that is very rare. I say “odd” because I honestly believe that Townsend means it when he says he doesn’t think they are very good. Yet they take what they do really seriously.

And it shows.

I just checked and I can watch it on Amazon Prime for no additional cost. Thanks for the idea. I’m running out of things to watch.

Yes, yes, yes and yes. :)

I believe that song epitimizes Rock and Role like no other song ever written. Even the subject matter of the lyrics.

Sky News (@SkyNews) Tweeted: The Who singer Roger Daltrey was not impressed when Sky News asked him about Brexit.

"If you want to sign up to be ruled by a f****n mafia, you do it"...lol. "Like we never toured in Europe before the EU?" Cool video.

Daltrey’s auto-bio is a great read. You realize after reading Pete’s and Roger’s auto-bios, that they are about as different as two human beings can be.

which means they’re conservative.

You're probably correct. I'm of the mind that I don't really care what anybody's politics are when I'm looking for entertainment. I just want them to keep them OUT of MY entertainment.

The first concert I ever saw was The Who in what is now the Key Arena in Seattle. This was around 1970. I’ll never forget it.

I saw them in concert at the Kingdome about ten years after that. We had tickets for the 300 level, but after we got in scalpers were selling ticket stubs from people who had purchased 100 level tickets. The girl I was with insisted we buy a couple. So we made our way downstairs and up near the stage. She got on my shoulders and stayed there for the entire show. Luckily she was a cute little thing that only weighed about 100 pounds. She loved it, but I was hot and couldn't see very well. The next day my ears were ringing and my shoulders were sore and the girl would barely give me the time of day.

I am a fan of Pete’s guitar playing, at least in the 70s.

I dare you to find a better solo than “Young Man Blues” at the 1970 Isle of Wight show.

Not so much of a fan of his current playing style, since he switched to playing a Fender Stratocaster, doesn’t sound like him at all.

Pete said in his bio that he's a "Socialist".

but the one thing I can do without is Pete’s extensive potty mouth riffraff between songs.....

Meh..an "f-bomb" or two. But that's rock, at least to me.

Blossom Music Center in Cleveland/Akron is pretty notorious for terrible stand-still traffic especially leaving the venue. Pete remarked that "there are no helicopters here. We're going to be stuck in the same traffic jam as you" which made me laugh.

One of the best things about The Who in the early days was the constant banter between Pete and Keith.

The introduction to “A Quick One While He’s Away” comes to mind. They almost come off like a Vaudeville Act.

Put me in the ‘I Like’ column when it comes to The Who, but I admit to wearing out my cassette tape of ‘Best Bits’ which was all Daltrey, in the 1980’s.

I NEED that on CD, but I can only find it on vinyl. :(

Not that there’s anything wrong with that! :)
