Indeed high altitude sonic booms can be heard over vast distances. IN recent years, Boeing has been testing a SS jet over the Ozarks of MO. I live in between St Louis ( spit, spit, hack) and Springfield, about 25 miles from Fort L Wood. As a combat engineer officer I have quite a bit of explosives experience and when we started hearing the booms that reverberated across central MO, from Mountain Home to Lake Ozark and from Rolla to Springfield indeed could not be demo from highway construction etc.

Turns out the Boeing published the dates of these test flights that were to go SS and sure enough, that boom was reported as described over nearly a 75 mile diameter of area.

Once, on the date and time of a test, I watched two jets at altitude flying probably a mile apart and a third came up the middle and as it came even, it disappeared in a vapor cloud and a boom followed a out 3o seconds later.

Plattsburg....

I thought Pittsburgh, er Plattsburg AFB had BUFFs. They are big and noisy but not supersonic.. ;-)

(I will check with a fellow high school friend who was stationed up there.. ;-)

Thanks Robert A Cook PE, quite right, sounds like a high altitude detonation of a bolide.

Those short, intense “flares” or “lines of light” are what I’ve see in most meteor flashes. The two long, extensive meteor flares I’ve seen stretched across more than 1/4 of the sky, but neither made any sound.

The nuclear blasts that were lit off just northwest of Los Vegas in the 50’s weapons tests were heard as distinct long roars (not a single boom as in the closer listeners) but were delayed 15-20 minutes going from Los Vegas to LA. So, that you or a neighbor heard a meteor explosion may mean the explosion and flash were many minutes earlier than your warning by sound. The Los Vegas area flashes from the nuclear bombs were seen clearly in the night skies from LA.

Maybe an earthquake?

Was in the basement hours after a minor shaking earthquake, and there was a loud “CRACK”.

Thought the then-wife dropped something. Neighbors heard the same thing, so it was an aftershock of sorts.

Something like this?

If there is a clear night tonight I'll see what I can see in the northern sky.

We owned a cabin on Champlain, the F-111s flew so low we could tickle their bellies as they flew over it. It was a SAC base but also home to a F-111 Unit. We shopped on base after I retired up there. By 2003 it was empty.

There weren’t any reports of earthquakes at the time.

There had been military jets flying over

Danger danger Anne Frances?

Just watched her in Blackboard Jungle. First time I ever saw it. Honestly.

I'm unfamiliar with "Honey West." Should I be embarrassed if my mother walked in and found me watching it alone?

“...To understand this you need to understand what a sonic boom is.
Various parts of the airplane generate sound...
When travelling at or faster than the speed of sound, all these sounds arrive at your ear simultaneously...all those 10 seconds.. arrive at your ear at the same moment...(all the 10 seconds or more of sound added together).
That’s why you only hear it once typically.
There are exceptions though. If the plane is long enough, and the nose and tail generate loud sounds, it is possible to experience a double sonic boom caused by the tail generating a second boom... You’d probably need a plane a mile long to experience a proper double boom.” [RGSpincich, post 22]

These phrases are wildly in error. The website where you found them might not be trustworthy.

A “sonic boom” is a shock wave. A shock wave is generated in our planet’s atmosphere by any material object traveling in excess of the local speed of sound, a speed referred to in technical jargon as “Mach 1.0”. The speed is never constant but varies with local conditions such as atmospheric pressure, temperature, humidity, particulate content etc. Temperature is by far the largest factor; the colder it gets, the slower the local speed of sound is.

The “boom” heard by observers on the ground is the air pressure changing suddenly as the shock wave travels over them.

Shock waves have nothing to do with sounds generated by the traveling object; bullets traveling faster than Mach 1.0 generate shock waves also.

An aircraft may generate more than one shock wave; they tend to emanate from sharp features like noses, wing edges, vertical & horizontal stabilizers, and the like. This is why more than one boom may be heard in quick succession. Shock waves also reflect off the surface of the earth and large solid objects like buildings, or topographic features like cliffs or canyon walls. In this way, additional booms sometimes make themselves heard. Think of them as echoes.
