How the New-Mom Mindset Shift Pushed Her to a 2:42 Marathon—And a Spot at Trials

When Gina Rouse graduated as a nurse from the University of Tennessee-Chattanooga in 2003, she intended to keep training like she did as a college runner.

“I got the night shift in my first job as a nurse,” Rouse, who now lives in Knoxville, Tennessee, told Runner’s World. “I was working from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m., and still trying to run twice a day before and after the shift. I definitely cut corners on sleep.”

Rouse soon realized that her new schedule made it impossible to keep training the way she did in college. So throughout most of her 20s, she stuck to a simple daily routine: work, run for 30 minutes, hang out with friends, sleep, repeat.

“Running was the last thing on my mind,” Rouse, now 39, said. “It wasn’t until I met my husband, who’s a runner, and we started going on runs as dates, that I got serious about it again. And it wasn’t until we had kids that I trained for marathons.”

Since Rouse had her first of three children at age 31—and became a full-time mom—she’s steadily improved in the marathon distance. In 2011, seven months after she had her oldest daughter, she finished the Atlanta Marathon in 3:15:20. Five years later, she ran a 2:45:25 at the 2016 Houston Marathon, just barely missing the cutoff time for the 2016 Olympic Marathon Trials. Rouse got her vengeance, though, the following year, when she qualified for the 2020 Trials by running 2:42:40 at the 2017 California International Marathon.

It all sounds pointless.

Marathons are not good for the body.

For a woman to go out and run a 3:15 marathon the first time out is very impressive. Probably puts her in the top 10% of the finishers including the men.

Her 2:42 to qualify for the Olympic trials is also impressive especially for a 39 yo working mom. She would probably need to take off about 15 minutes to make the team. But just to compete for an Olympic slot is every runner’s dream.

Don’t watch the Olympics anymore, but I’ll always remember Joan Benoit blowing away the field in the 1984 LA Olympics. To me that was right up there with the US hockey team in Lake Placid.

What a gal!

I bet (and hope) that she’s a MAGA type gal....

This is a real female athlete, I spit upon those tranny jackasses taking opportunities away from women. I have no animosity towards them, just wish they would use common sense. Once exposed to androgen then NO participating in sports as a female...apply this rule to both XX and XY.

It’s the androgen, stupid!

It wasn’t. She spent a long time in college training for a career she happily dumped when she found a guy who’d be her sperm donor and personal atm. Now she puts whatever she wants to do ahead of everything else. She’s a raving modern woman success.

“Marathons are not good for the body.”

SO TRUE! I was a runner who brought my kids up running - 4 ran a half with me one year while 2 others did the 5-mile (I only did half’s - always injured something training for full’s), and 3 are marathoners. One son is still a serious marathoner & tri-athlete - but he is always dealing with injuries. But he’s addicted, having done all the big marathons.

The other 3 of us agree: full marathons are not good for the body. Half marathons are great and do no harm.

It’s a rare person who can do full marathons regularly w/o injuries.

I had to quit running at 69 5 years ago due to arthritis under my kneecaps - and only walk now - and really miss my running.......

Joan Benoit is shooting for another goal: to win a marathon in each of six consecutive decades. If she wins on in 2020 or so, she will clinch it.

Helloooooo, she and her husband are both doing this, and she’s raising the kids, which was what most women did before the push for women in the workplace — which I’m fine with — and, after that, modern feminism — which I’m NOT fine with, because it ruins everything it touches.

That’s why people take time to recover, rather than starting right back out of the gate. They can be done, but you need a few weeks of going lightly to recover.

I have a strong feeling her spouse was okay with her decision to be a full-time mom.

That subject was most assuredly taken care of prior to the engagement.

If not, they would have been divorced by now.

Matter of fact, they would have been divorced just a few years into their marriage as he would most likely have believed what you believe.

Many work-minded women go to college not anticipating marriage and children and life surprises them...

Have you considered using a treadmill for walking with it at an inclined level?

Might be a ‘go for the distance,’ plan would help you walk your way into enjoyment.

Started Glucosamine & Chondroitin 19 years ago and it kept me running....and playing the guitar........

Still take it plus Arthro-8, a great OTC med for arthritis.

I walk a very hilly 3 1/2 to 4 1/4 miles 3 to 4 times a week - all through heavy hardwood forest, only 1/2 mile alongside a major highway. Much prefer that to an elliptical - have a nice one tho - but hate it - doesn’t fit my bod at all, and computer died anyway.....Pro Form 235 - notorious for computer dying........even tho it’s Android.....

At time I do jog a 100 yds. in my walks now and then.....

I definitely understand your viewpoint.

The feminists shot themselves in the foot, wanting to be so tolerant in ever bit of life.

It’s coming back to bite them and in a big way.

The younger women are extremely confused, as well. They want to be appearing tolerant to avoid getting blacklisted by groups controlling their sport field and at the same time are not able to match the fake women because the fake women are just that, fake women.
