A mouse appears to dive headfirst into a deep fryer at a Whataburger restaurant in Bastrop, Texas, in a scene caught on video by a customer and posted online.

Brushawn Lewis published the footage to Facebook early on Sunday. It shows restaurant staff trying to catch the mouse as it scampers across the counter, before it launches itself right into the fryer ― to the immense shock of staff and onlookers.

“Who else needs a refund?” one person can be heard asking.

If you were wondering why your onion rings tasted funny, and why there was hair in your fries, now you know.

Pansies. Grab a steel bowl from the table (the one the mouse is hiding behind will work), dump the contents in the garbage (unless you were planning to continue using it after the mouse ran through it), and cover the mouse.

Whataburger lemon pies are one of my top two fast food desserts, right up there with Taco Bell’s caramel apple empanadas.

An epicure dining at Crewe
Found quite a large mouse in his stew.
Said the waiter, “Don’t shout
And wave it about
Or the rest will be wanting one too.”

The first thing to expect is a thorough cleaning & review by the store management, Franchise holder, Whataburger Corporate and local health department. That being said and in the absence of other reliable information, a single mouse is not a definitive sign of an infestation. Such vermin do come via from multiple entries, ranging from restaurant supplies to open doors.

That is why they call it “what-a-burger”, you never know what is in it.

Knowing that much here is being said with a smile, as an amateur historian it behooves me to point out how reliable our food industry is, especially in comparison with our own past and in comparison with the rest of the world. Deride our fast food outlets as cookie-cutter and dull, they still, as a rule, practice sanitation at an impressive level.

One of these days, if I get to an area that has one of these chains like What-a-Burger, Carl's, Jack-in-the-Box or similar, stories like this sensational video will be unlikely to convince me to avoid the same. This my fellow Americans, is a very real advantage of living in the First World! I wonder how many times adventurous eaters like the late Anthony Bourdain went searching for late night remedies!
