Ebola virus outbreak spreads, claiming first victims in a new region of Congo

The eastern DR Congo province of South Kivu has recorded its first confirmed cases of Ebola in the country's year-old epidemic, one of which was a fatality, the provincial government said Friday. "Two cases which tested positive for Ebola were confirmed overnight in South Kivu, in Lwindi district in the Mwenga region," it said in a statement

South Kivu Governor Theo Ngwabidje told reporters: "Teams from the national anti-Ebola coordination campaign arrived yesterday to provide support."

The disease is spread by contact with infected bodily fluids and is fought with time-honored but laborious techniques of tracing contacts and quarantining them. The outbreak is the 10th since Ebola was identified in 1976. It is the deadliest on record after more than 11,000 people were killed in Guinea, Sierra Leone and Liberia between 2014 and 2016.

Nuke it from orbit. Then send in flamethrower robots to re-melt the glass.

Bring Out Your Dead

Post to me or FReep mail to be on/off the Bring Out Your Dead ping list.

The purpose of the “Bring Out Your Dead” ping list (formerly the “Ebola” ping list) is very early warning of emerging pandemics, as such it has a high false positive rate.

So far the false positive rate is 100%.

At some point we may well have a high mortality pandemic, and likely as not the “Bring Out Your Dead” threads will miss the beginning entirely.

*sigh* Such is life, and death...

If a quarantine saves just one child's life, it's worth it.

Don’t worry Congolese ebola sufferers. If that big, meany, bad, orange man refuses to bring you to the US, our girl Justine True-dope will welcome you to Kanadahar (canadistan?), with open arms. (Not his, you understand, but some poor Mountie will tasked with giving you a hearty welcome and carrying your bags over the border for you.) As your survival time after contracting ebola is short, True-dope gladly welcomes all your kids, parents, brothers, sisters, cousins, etc. After all ‘diversity is our strength!’

I think Bill Burr said it, I don’t know what Ebola does or is, except make you go to the airport to board a plane...

let’s let hundreds of congolese through our southern border, not test them, send them to San Antonio and disperse them thruout the country. Oh, we already did that.

I find it sad that there are still some people dying, but there is hope with this new promising treatment.

What is sad is that Ebola has spread beyond the original containment area. Ring vaccination with the new vaccines appears to be slowing the spread of the disease but has not stopped it.

Best to temper the enthusiasm for the report of a "potential cure". That treatment appears to cut the mortality rate from 80% to 30% if it is given immediately after first indications of infection. The number of patients treated is too small to be sure yet if that result will hold up.

The surviving patients are still carriers of dormant virus for an unknown time period and may still suffer various damage from post-Ebola syndromes.

There is more work to be done before doing a victory dance.

The Magic Eight-Ball says; "Outcome uncertain. Ask again later".

Infectious Disease ping - Ebola (Update)- confinement area spreading

flamberge :"What is sad is that Ebola has spread beyond the original containment area.
Ring vaccination with the new vaccines appears to be slowing the spread of the disease but has not stopped it.
..The surviving patients are still carriers of dormant virus for an unknown time period
and may still suffer various damage from post-Ebola syndromes. "

Ebola virus has been found in male patient's testes as long as 6-9 months after infection confirmed.
Recent studies have indicated the virus may also infect the vitreous liquid within the victim's eyes.
Armed social conflict, assaults, and distrust of medical authorities have hampered the vaccination process.
One might think that concentric circles of medical treatment and vacinnation around the infected area
with the 'bulls-eye' being in the most concentrated viral area would be effective,
however fear, and the availability of transport suggest only a strict quarantine would be most effective.
