Huawei has launched its own operating system — the HongmengOS, known in English as the HarmonyOS, said the CEO of the Chinese tech giant’s consumer division, Richard Yu, on Friday.

Speaking at the Huawei Developer Conference in the Chinese city of Dongguan, Yu said the operating system can be used across different devices from smartphones to smart speakers and even sensors. It’s part of Huawei’s play in the so-called Internet of Things, which refers to devices connected to the internet.

HarmonyOS will first be used on “smart screen products,” such as televisions, later this year. Over the next three years, the operating system will be used in other devices, including wearables and car head units.

If one thinks the US Tech companies does not repect privacy, Chinese state backed Huawei is another story. No way I am going to adopt an operating system to control my house with I bet has lots of backdoors and time bombs that the Chine Communist can order Huawei to activate. Rather operate light switches and appliances the ole fashioned way.

I rather think that the enemies of the United States will likely attack embedded systems like SCADA, rather than take the time to take down the lights in your bathroom, but your point is well taken generally. The greatest vulnerability may be in the most common objects - smartphones, and their hardware (chipsets with hard-wired back doors) and software (OS’s that optimize the efficiency of their hacks.) Sadly our government seems to lag so far behind in terms of its understanding of our native technology sector, there’s no way it could be expected to appreciate what is going on in China’s tech sector.

And do they have Google’s suite of Android applications to go along with it? gmail? Google maps? A whole bunch of others. Google maps is a big one - even Apple had to cave on that one. Although, Google doesn’t really seem to care what OS you’re using, so they might do, or allow, development of gmaps etc for this new OS>

I would not trust a Chinese company anymore than I’d trust Google!

I’m sure the operating system has the added benefit of tracking your social points automatically, essential for Chinese citizenry knowing if they are allowed to travel, take out loans or do business in China.

Since google enforces China’s policy on internet use, google inc. IS the Chinese government.

Of course. How hard is it to copy the source of an open source system.

They are a big company and probably have long had an internal operating system project simply for bargaining leverage with google.

Smartphones are always spying on you.

Your smartphone knows when you go hunting, or to the shooting range.

Your smartphone knows what you bought off it and how much you paid.

I often use Open Street Map.

A company can buy US government topo map info.

UK Ordnance Survey info is for rent.

The Chinese government surely has good mapping capabilities.

Which is more evil? Google or communist China?

Same as asking which is more evil? Stalin or Mao?
