Like a human wave every few minutes, two hundred or so tourists surge towards the "Mona Lisa," mobile phones in hand to make the best of every second of their time in front of the world's most famous painting.
Hundreds of other hearts sink as museum attendants swiftly draw the rope across to hold back the next wave of the queue that snakes round the vast gallery in the Louvre in Paris.

It’s peak season now. Try earlier or later in the year. April-May can have questionable weather, but it’s beautiful in spring and less crowds.
I went to Paris for the day, back in 1984. Went to the Louvre and just saw two things - the Mona Lisa and the Venus de Milo. I thinkk my friend and I were in the museum for less than a half hour. We had limited time, and lots to see in the city!
I’d like to see the Code of Hammurabi myself if I were to visit the Louvre. My mother told me the same sort of thing when she visited there, regarding the huge throng of people waiting just to see the Mona Lisa.
My daughter was disappointed David’s massive “Coronation of Napoleon” was being restored. She took AP World History this past academic year.
When I went, “Mona Lisa” was a huge let down. One cannot get close to it due to the security and crowds. The painting is behind bullet proffer glass. The painting itself is dark so hard to make out details.
LOL!!! We stayed for an hour!! Mona Lisa....Venus De Milo and Winged Victory!
'Cause it ain't that pretty at all...
Ban cell phones.
That’ll thin the herd.
Ghastly woman with no eyebrows - Dr. Who.
My son just got back from Europe (studying abroad), spent a full-day at the Louvre and said except for about 3 items (the Mona Lisa being one of them), the Louvre was basically empty with no lines to see anything - apparently 90% of the tourists believe there really are only 3 things worth seeing (and taking a selfie in front of) at the Louvre - people are just so fricking sheep, and have no idea how they are supposed to live except by watching what other people do on social media and then doing the same: wait in line in front of the Mona Lisa, take selfie, post to instagram, ok time to leave....
Yes, I was there a few years ago. Not an enjoyable experience at all. Couldnt wait to get out of there!
I agree. We preferred the Musee dOrsay.
Me too. I don't even like the Mona Lisa. (I like what I like and not what somebody else tells me I'm supposed to like.)
I thought France pretty much shut down in August...
FWIW, I went back in the early ‘70s, and there were then so many people clustered around Mona Lisa you could only get a glimpse of the small, dark painting hermetically sealed behind thick glass and flanked by guards. Dissappinting.
On the other hand, one had better see great art now before the muzzies completely take over Paris and proceed with the religion’s prime goal of taking everyone back to the sixth century.
I got to see the Mona Lisa from about five feet away by myself with nothing but a velvet rope in the way. It was on loan to NY's Met Museum in the mid 60s. I'm not sure why no one else was there, but no one else was there. In retrospect it seems rather strange.

You would have it virtually to yourself. Almost no one else seemed interested when I was there two years ago.

if i may ask, just how bad is the Muslim/African presence in Paris? We’d like to go but I’m not interested in navigating around a bunch of ghettos. tia!!
Maybe they’re going there for the Air Conditioning because of France’s Global Warming ,LOL
