I admit I’ve never held a handgun, but I’m thinking efficiency is likely less about the weapon and more about range time...?

Won’t debate merits, but I’ve had a G-17 10 years and never a misfire or mechanical issue. So I can’t say much negative about Glock. You can argue purchase price, but you can certainly spend a lot more.

Well, there is that paltry 1.6 billion round purchase of ammo left over from the Obama admin. Gotta do something with it.

.357 magnum semi-auto? First I’ve heard of that.

Wait until they have the inevitable Glock accidental discharge in the vicinity of the President.

There are a lot of times when a 9 mm is the right weapon, and I love my Glocks. However, for the Secret Service, I want something with a one-shot stop, even against a motivated opponent. The .357 or .45 is a much better choice for that mission than a 9 mm. And, no, I don’t trust every Secret Service agent to be a perfect shot. The ones I shoot with are so close to perfect that it doesn’t matter, but they are the ones who get a lot of range time. I worry about the ones who go to the range to train up when they have to qualify.

Every time I think about getting a decent pistol I always migrate to .45, the “man stopper”. But Frankly, 9mm ammo is so relatively cheap and plentiful that I’m thinking that, unless you are a “gun enthusiast”, 9mm is simply a no brainer. And getting 18 shots to a magazine is hard to beat.

Unless the characteristics of the 9mm are changed, I have questions.

1. 9mm tend to go thru targets creating collateral damage.

2. 9mm do not have the stopping power of a .45 cal etc.

Now if these 2 issues are fixed with this change, sounds good to me. However, I didn’t see stopping power and collateral damage as issues in the change.

If you browse around on youtube you can find some comparison videos of 9mm vs other calibers. The new 9mm ammo is much better than it used to be and compares well with .357sig, .40 and .45 auto. The game has changed a lot. With 9mm you get good performance and less recoil and more rounds in the mag.

I’m a die-hard Glock FanBoi, but I’m shocked, shocked I say, that the USSS isn’t piggybacking on the rock bottom pricing of the U.S. Army M17 and M18 contract.

I see a lot of the inevitable 9mm vs .45 here. That reminded me of a paper I wrote in college. It was called 'The Advantages Of The Semiautomatic Pistol In American Law Enfocement'. I think it was about 1988 or so, before Glock took over that market. A lot of agencies at that time were transitioning from revolver to pistol.

As part of my research, I went to the local Georgia State Patrol office. At that time Troopers had a choice of Smith & Wesson 4506, or 5906.

I was lucky enough to interview two troopers. The one who carried the .45 said, 'More stopping power', and the one who carried the 9mm said, 'More firepower'.

So that argument has been going on for a long time. Actually these days, all duty ammo, 9mm, .40, .45, is all loaded to the same standards. So it doesn't really matter what you carry.

"Steve Minguez, a retired NYPD firearms instructor who worked with the Secret Service for several years when he was detailed to the NYPD Intelligence division's dignitary protection unit":“With the 9mm cartridge, you’re getting optimum velocity out of a short barrel,” he said. “With a 9 millimeter, you could fire [a bullet] out of a 4-inch barrel and you’re going to get 1200 feet and change per second,” Minguez said. Yet with “a .38 Special or a .357, they need a much longer barrel to get to optimum velocity – whose top is mid-to-low 800 feet [range].”

What the heck is this guy talking about? Most commercial .357 Magnum loads do more than 1400 fps out of a 4" barrel, and get into the 1500s and 1600s out of a 6" barrel. .357 Sig loads also do more than 1400 fps out of a 4" barrel. Even .38 +P do more than 800 fps out of a 4" barrel.

What kind of charlatans do they have teaching NYPD cops?
