On the morning of Saturday, July 13, Cindy Eiseler and three of her friends were running along the Lansing River Trail by Michigan State University in Lansing, Michigan, when they heard a voice calling for help from the woods nearby.
“We heard a man’s voice crying out ‘I need help, I need help!’” Eiseler told Runner’s World. “It stopped us dead in our tracks not knowing exactly where the man’s voice was coming from.”
The group did not want to venture into the woods alone, so they called 911 and assured the man that help was on the way. While waiting, another group of runners came by. Eiseler and her friends explained the situation, and two male runners in the group went in to check out what was going on.
They discovered that a man, a 37-year-old whose name was not released, had fallen from a tree onto a splintered tree trunk the night before, impaling his shoulder and trapping him to the ground. He remained there for 14 hours.
The Michigan State University Police Department confirmed the incident in a statement to Runner’s World, but could not comment on why the man was in the tree.

What is a 37 year old man doing climbing a tree in the woods alone?
I think they were hedging their bets, aware that a cry for help could be a lure to trap one of them into a rape-y situation or some such.
A guy calling for help in the woods sounds like a rape trap to me.
Maybe he had some good binoculars and was scoping out a sorority house? Wonder if his Dockers were at his ankles when they found him on the Vlad the Impaler device?
They were girls. Smart decision.

YES. Once in the woods, if the man was a rapist, the girls would have been easy prey.
Guess that answers the age old question: If a man falls from on a tree in the woods and there’s no one around, does he make a sound?

While I completely agree with most of the others on this thread (the girls were right to avoid the apparent or even possible ambush and summon men for help), you might like this thread.

Close to home. Almost happened to me recently when trimming branches. I was standing on the ground but had to quickly back up, and stumbled and fell on the ground. Nothing wrong yet, ground was soft and I knew that may fall, so I was ready. But then I looked next to me to the left and saw a large branch with a sub-branch mostly removed - the remaining stub looked like a 6” dagger sticking straight up. Missed it by that much. That was a BIG lesson learned.
They made the correct decision.
