Undead Tree Stump Is Being Kept Alive by Neighboring Trees
Gizmondo ^ | 25 july 2019 | George Dvorsky

Posted on 07/25/2019 1:22:39 PM PDT by DUMBGRUNT

A tree stump in New Zealand is very much alive, thanks to an interconnected root system that benefits both the stump and its neighboring trees. Scientists say this unusual symbiotic arrangement could change our very conception of what it means to be a tree.

We tend to think of trees as individuals, but the roots of some species fuse together to allow the sharing of resources, such as water, carbon, mineral nutrients, and microorganisms.

Leuzinger and Bader stumbled upon the stump while out for a hike. The woody stub caught their eye because callus tissue could be seen growing over its dead and rotting parts. It was also producing resin, which indicated the presence of living tissue. This prompted a more thorough investigation in which the researchers measured water flowing through the tissues of the stump, and also its rate of respiration, which matched those seen in the surrounding trees.

MAD was very cutting edge in the 60’s.

Down here in Tennessee the utility company sends out a letter saying they’re going to prune trees that interfere with the lines...the owner has little choice in the matter...maybe if you think they might cut it down you can prune it yourself before they get there.

Yes, it was! As a Mad Magazine addict in the ‘60s I can fully confirm that. :)

You think she's always just an inanimate object like that now, but watch what happens when Mueller asked her to dance with him...

Mushrooms interlink tree roots. Without mushrooms, the small trees die in the shade of the larger trees.

Yes, Avatar was kinda real.

I did think about RBG, but Hillary is so much more like a tree stump.

Ours has the white berries, at least they don’t stain things when you track them in but I’ve never seen even a bird touch them.

We have an easement adjacent to or property
If they are only in the easement they just send a notice, but come on our side we need to sign some papers.

And with my wife forever hating the mulberry tree...
A free tree removal, it was a goner.

“. I recently saw an article about a study that said people who eat a lot of blue cheese have less heart problems than people who don’t.”

Can’t be true. Nothing I love to eat is good for me.

I keep hoping a researcher will publish a study saying bacon and BBQ will ensure a long life.

I’d send him or her a good bottle of scotch if they did!

Roquefort is made with sheep’s milk, gorgonzola with cow’s milk, that is perhaps the only difference, the fungus culture being the same.

Is a Tulip Poplar the same as a “Sweet Gum” tree?

Joyce Kilmer poem.
Had to memorize it in Junior High.
Odd, it came back to me.
Thanks very much!

That’s why I eat whatever blue cheese is cheapest at the time. There are at least 44 varieties of blues all made with Penicillium roqueforti.
