Whether you like bourbon, scotch, whiskey, you will not be able to put this book down until you have read all 262 pages of everything about whiskey over and over again. Lew Bryson covers it all from what is in whiskey, how it is made, what are the detail flavors, content, chemistry, and what causes them. He covers all the best brands, aging and what makes them all different. Such an unbelievable resource for finding your favorite whiskeys that you will keep it close by...I read some of it every day!
I didn’t know FreeRepublic was a site for hawking anything we might produce....
I’m sure glad I make a monthly contribution. </sarc>
If you love whiskey get a bottle of Forty Creek Spike if you can find it.
barley
+
rye
corn
(other grains >:( )
+ distillation
+ barrel aging
= whiskey
It’s that last part that creates the most variation. I never developed an experienced palette. I just like peat smoked barley. :D
I’m glad for posts like these. Makes Free Republic more of a community instead of just another bulletin board for politics.
I am a whisky fan. Settling in on the Bowmore Darkest.
Whatever you do dont try Weller.....
Then I wont have trouble getting it.
Whistling Pig is a great rye whiskey
That peat smoke can be a bit much. Islays are, for me, an acquired taste. I get what they’re going for but I’m always left wondering why they wanted to get there. I don’t mind a little peat smoke flavor but if I wanted to drink coal cut with diesel fuel....
Anyway, I like my bourbons and will latch on to the occasional Speyside or Highland but the Laphroaigs and such are a bit much for me.
I’ll do you one worse. I don’t just like a nice peaty Islay, but I like the south shore stuff. The first time I tried one I thought someone put band aids in my drink. It was the iodine , but it very quickly grew on me.
That’s what the Islay folk keep telling me. My brother has been trying to get me hooked on them for years. I have a bottle of Laphroaig 10 yr on my shelf that I’ll go back to once in a while just to see if anything has changed but it’s always more work than pleasure to get it down.
“you will start drooling over the thought of a shot of good sipping whiskey....with one ice cube in it. I was amazed when I first experienced how one ice cube opens up and electrifies the flavors of a fine single malt scotch.
My grandmother baked bread in a peat-fired stove on her farm in Ireland. My first sip of an Islay 40 years later brought me right back to her kitchen. Very pleasant memories.
Have you tried Caol Ila? The twelve year old is something special...
Have been dabbling with Lowland Scotch lately. Glen Kinchie is the excellent example of the style. A hint of toffee and “buttery”. Very nice in the summer months. Not at all smokey, however.
Great thread - thanks for posting.
Nothing quite like a good 18 year old....Scotch that is. ;-)
With so many great bourbons, ryes and scotches to drink in our bar who has time to read a book???
Bourbon is the only American liquor.
There are rules and restrictions on the ingredients in Bourbon and how it is made.
Like a barrel must be made of oak and it can only be used Once. 50% must be corn.
While whiskey can be made in a dirty bathtub in Ireland.
And there are NO rules or regulation.
Just saying
Thanks everyone for your shared interest in whiskey...it is American and patriotic because it was a large part of our founding. Take a look at Lew Bryson’s book, it is astounding.........
Did the Kentucky Bourbon trail
Buffalo Trace
