Guess they feel they need three versions now, like Carrie gotUnfortunately, horror films don't age well. Younger viewers tend to be put off by the dress and dated styles of pacing and cinematography and don't find them frightening in the least.
I remember Phantasm scaring the bejeezus out of me when I was a kid. Not long ago I played it for some much younger cousins who laughed and thought it was stupid. They were right.

The 1963 version of The Haunting is the scariest movie I have ever seen. I can only watch it once every few years. It scares the living heck outta me.

I'll never forget when I first showed "JAWS" to my kids. I thought for sure it would scare the heck out of them like it did to me back in 1975. But they were laughing throughout.
To them, all the special effects that made the shark look so real back then looked cheesy and amateur to their eyes. Also, the characters in the movie seemed stupid to them. Except Quint. Even 40 years later, Quint seems to have maintained his coolness factor.
