Spring weather has delayed the Texas watermelon harvest, casting doubt on the supply ahead of the Fourth of July holiday. Fields across the state are behind schedule due to weather, meaning peak sales for the summer holiday are in jeopardy statewide, growers say. A couple of weeks ago I bought a medium sized seedless at a Walmart grocery in nw Arkansas. The sticker indicated it was a Texas product.
It must have floated, broke away, sailed up the Gulf, then upstream through the Mississippi into the Arkansas and up the Illinois rivers to get here. Curiously, there were several large containers of them with similar Texas product labels.
