New research has identified a type of bacteria found in the microbiomes of elite athletes that contributes to improved capacity for exercise. These bacteria, members of the genus Veillonella, are not found in the guts of sedentary people.
By taking a closer look at the bacteria, the researchers from Joslin Diabetes Center determined Veillonella metabolizes lactic acid produced by exercise and converts it into propionate, a short chain fatty acid. The human body then utilizes that propionate to improve exercise capacity. The results were reported today in Nature Medicine.
The work began in 2015 with fecal samples from Boston Marathon runners. Jonathan Scheiman, Ph.D., then a researcher in the lab of George Church, Ph.D., at Harvard Medical School, collected samples during a time span of one week before the Marathon to one week after the Marathon. He also collected samples from sedentary individuals. Dr. Scheiman then brought the samples to Dr. Kostic, who analyzed them to determine the species of bacteria in both cohorts.

Yo! Lance, did you get the shite?

Midichlorians, right?
There’s a lot of hype on the micro biome.
Too much recently.
Grant renewal time.
It’s obvious I have zero Veillonella. Can I get reparations or something for this condition?
Pipe down and drink your s**t smoothy!
“Performance-enhancing bacteria”
VERY hard to believe, in fact, I don’t believe it.
Han shot first.
there is actually a movement, excuse the pun, where people do drink feces to ‘cure’ things like intestinal problems like crohn’s and ibd & such- there are supposedly even crap pills you can buy that are supposed to be tested and approved-
Will Fecal Microbiota Transplantation Work for Crohns Disease?

It claims to ‘replace unhealthy gut bacteria with healthy bacteria’
Substitute “health-enhancing” for “performance-enhancing” and you can get a better understanding.
Gut bacteria has an incredible affect on our well or unwell being.
There is an old saying, death starts in the colon.
So what will be the first sports drink to advertise their drink is loaded with lactic acid?
“Its obvious I have zero Veillonella. Can I get reparations or something for this condition?”
Give Liawatha a call and find out if she’ll add you to her list ...
Every elite athlete will now need their “official shiite donor” to pass tests
Don’t doubt me on this - soon we will have a market for top athletes poo pills. I’m not kidding. The FDA will try to squash this but its going to go black market in Beverly Hills.
The bacteria ate his brain.
I have heard nothing legitimate about folks with crohns or IBS “drinking” feces.
But there has been plenty of evidence people with Crohns, colitis & IBS have very weak microbiomes (smaller populations and less varieties of healthy microbes) in their gut, and plenty of recent research with fecal transplants - administered like a colonoscopy, but putting healthy fecal material in. The fecal material used is first diagnosed for any pathogens and diseases and rejected if it contains any harmful elements. The process does apparently “transplant” healthy microbiome populations and with some folks has had very positive results. Beyond transplanting the microbes, the material is expelled in the normal process of elimination.
Some of it, certainly.
But there also is truth to what they are saying.
“But there also is truth to what they are saying.”
Agree. It’s a very interesting and important subject.
But as I see reported, gut bacteria seem to control everything.
It controls a lot more than people give it credit for.
Most people wouldn’t think its that important at all.
