This could have turned out very badly for these ladies.
The whole time they didn’t video him or get pics of his plates?
Most if not all rideshare services give you a license plate to verify.
I’m glad the news source showed us what a ‘similar’ dirt road looked like even if it was chained off - otherwise we might not know what a dirt road was.
I wonder if there is a way the Uber app can be tweaked to notify a user via their smartphone that their assigned driver/car is in the vicinity.
omg,, a dirt road?
only bad things happen on a dirt road ..
The man was 5’3”
If need be, the women probably could have taken him.
That said, women have to be on better alert than that.
Perhaps the driver was scared that two strange women jumped into his car to abduct him so he drove down a dirt road with the hopes of running into the woods to escape.
1) Always check the license plate of your Uber ride
2) Always keep you phone in your hand while riding Uber
3) Always get in the back seat
And it helps to get your CCW and carry.
cabs are looking better and better these days
So, do these perps cruise around and stop when they see a pedestrian looking their car over? How do they know an Uber has been called?
I’ve taken Uber four times and each time I knew the car make and model that would be picking me up, and the license plate number. Verifying the info takes about two seconds.
Uber - The fun begins where the pavement ends.
So, are they still going down the dirt road with the fake Uber driver? Just how long is that road anyhow?...
I had Uber pick my kids up Friday night
You even get a picture of your driver
Its safer than a cab
They were tired and not at all drunk.
OK. And then what happened?
The passenger in the rear seat informed the driver that he was in the wrong location and that she was going to call 911 at which time the unidentified man snatched the phone from her hand.
The car stopped and both women exited on what was later identified as Mitchellville Road.
Police said the driver approached the women and one was able to grab the phone back and call 911.
The suspect fled and both women remained on scene until deputies arrived several minutes later.
Although the drivers intention in offering the women a ride is unknown, it is clear that both women were very fortunate to escape harm, the sheriffs office said in a statement.
Authorities have not been able to identify the man but described him as having a dark complexion, possibly Hispanic or Indian, with a medium build, dark hair and approximately 53.
Build the Wall!!!
There are lot of holes in the official explanation for this. There have been instances of Uber drivers assaulting passengers.
The girl in Columbia was killed a week or so before Uber went public. No word from the “real’ Uber driver. Initial reports claimed the student thought it was her Uber ride. No word on how they knew what she was thinking.
The Uber app shows in great detail where exactly the ride is. If she thought it was hers, hers must have been close by. There s no other likely car in the video.
Huh, last week I drove to a local train station
to buy a RR ticket (since the fare app changed
it became unreliable); I was turning near the entrance
when a young lady hopped into the back of my
SUV thinking I was Uber - I had the doors unlocked
as I just dropped someone off nearby.
Worse, my right passenger door had the child
lock on (because my adult son is autistic and though not
a runner, still tries to open the door in motion)
and she couldnt let herself out, likely the precise situation
the tragic college student found herself in.
Of course I stopped and let her out immediately, didnt
have an incident or to lecture her beyond watch
whose car youre getting to. Im sure this has happened
100s of times. Me after almost getting killed in a
Uber driving way too fast in a Tstorm in Memphis in a
hurry to drop us at the airport I never use em. Anyone
it seems can be Uber or Lyft, some are both and the
vehicles can be any condition any kind.
I still can’t even think about that other one. too much horror in her last minutes to conceive.
I always tell me wife to ask the driver “who are you here to pick up?” from a safe distance.
I’ve been on Hilton Head (it’s not Hilton Head Island...just Hilton Head) a LOT. Where did he find a dirt road there.
Or did they end up back in Bluffton? Not a whole lot of dirt roads left there any more.
Could have been a drive way, but....
