Volkswagen has been thinking about bringing a compact pickup truck to the U.S., and it might want to hurry up.
Custom car body outfit Smyth Performance has unveiled a conversion kit to turn a VW New Beetle into a pickup and its already the Massachusetts companys best seller.
According to Motor 1, the first 100 kits were sold out during a pre-order period at $2,990 a pop.
It's compatible with the New Beetle that went out of production in 2011 and features an aluminum step side bed with a retro flair that suits the cars styling.
Smyth calls them "utes", using the Australian term for a car-based pickup.
Smyth says a skilled builder can complete the installation at home and offers instructions on how to do it, but owners can also send their car to a shop to get the work done.

I really like the VW pickup design, especially since it's based on the first generation VW Beetles (1997-2011) with the classic VW bubble top, as opposed to the later generation which had a flatter roof line.
1997-2011 retro VW Beetles I just learned are called the "New Edition VW Beetle".
2012-2019, VW Beetle A5
Oh... I watched a YouTube video of the new unit. The interviewer stated that it was not available in the states. A cool unit for younger folks. Tons of options.
All Electric......................
2022...................
Thanks, very clear now.
Everything about the original NB is a Golf. First generation was built on the Golf platform - only the body shape is different. A fun car to drive.
Second generation is built on the Jetta platform.
I have a Honda Ridgeline, and we love it.
However in spite of promises by the sales reps, you can’t have skid plates installed to take it off road. That eliminated about 90% of my fly fishing sites. So, I would be interested in one of these:
“At just over 193 inches long, the Tarok is small enough to be powered by a 1.4-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine with just 147 hp, but is equipped with a permanent all-wheel-drive system, a skid plate and has 9.6-inches of ground clearance, which is more than some full-size trucks.”
Tarok? Is that another Honda model? I know next to nothing about any vehicles of the past 40 or so years.
My best friend gave me his 2017 Ridgeline just before he died. It had 4,234 miles on it. It's been a good truck...rocks from the highway have cracked the front windshield, twice.
I had a VW micro-bus back in the day.
Day-glow stars on the headliner & a Mr. Natural/ Keep on Truckin’ sticker on the rear window.
Had to park it on a hill, roll down in second & pop the clutch to start it.
Good times!
We buy a new battery every 3+ years and new tires about then.
The first month it got clipped a few places in the rear in parking lots, and that is the damage so far.
We use it when the California rains hit for days and some frosty mornings. As you know they are really good in bad weather.
My wife gets Home Depot gift cards, so the Ridgeline, my Veterans Driver’s license* and I go to bring the stuff to the Ridgeline and then home.
* We get 10% off all purchases at HD by being a vet.
I have a 1979 Super Beetle convertible.
Air cooled rear engine 4 speed. Silver on black.
Still runs like a sewing machine.
I feel the same way about the old Fiat 500s. My parents owned a late 1960s one when I was in elementary school. So cute!!
Will fit 1 bag of dog food and 2 butterfly bushes.
What is it good for?
That's what my pragmatic self was wondering. Looks useless for an American. Tie a goat back there and he'd eat the thing while en route.
If the shrink ray zaps it again it'll turn into one of these:
>I feel the same way about the old Fiat 500s. My parents owned a late 1960s...
I owned an 850 in the mid 70’s. Fun little car. Did I say little ? You don’t get into an 850, you put it on and wore it. There are motorcycles made today with engines 4 times the size but I still had it up over 90 on the freeway, (while sitting a foot or so off the road).
HAHAHA!
Not very manly; you wouldn’t see one in our neighborhood. Even a quad looks more useful than that VW
Well, I’m happy that the company that invented the *makeover* is doing well. Go Trump.
I think that is a VW SUV model that they snuck into the market with. They sold a few at zero down and a good interest rate. All if not most of the small and medium SUVs look alike.
Yup. I get the same at Lowes.
