Full title:

Cat sparks $7,500 rescue mission after getting stuck on bridge six days; mission fails, pet gets bored and wanders home

Hatty, 5, became trapped on the Royal Albert Bridge, which connects Plymouth and Saltash, on Friday, and firefighters spent around five hours trying to get her down in an ordeal costing $7,500.

The train system which operates the bridge even planned to close the tracks to rescue her, while the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (RSPCA) was also present.

But when firefighters had decided to give up for the day, vowing to return Thursday, the cat, who had been missing for two weeks before turning up on the bridge, returned home on Wednesday night, according to the Plymouth Herald.

Kirsty Howden, Hatty’s owner, said the cat walked into the garden of her home in Saltash.

She said the cat had just “strolled past fire and media crews”. ...”

“She is a bit skinny and smelly, very vocal and has now headed upstairs and put herself to bed.”

Was there no one brave enough to stand up and shout;
“Crimey! It’s just a bloody Cat! That’s enough misuse of public funds from the lot of you! Everyone go home and have a cup of tea! OUT!”

Long ago a good friend of mine said, regarding cats “trapped” in trees and “needing” rescue, “you don’t see very many cat skeletons in trees.”

It cant be denied that these kind of things cost money and put people at risk but they do serve a real purpose as a real training exercise for mission cohesiveness. They get good PR for first responders too.

Did she ask them to save it?

One thing I get a bit frustrated with is our tax dollars (and laws) being used to protect animals. Until the last century, animals were considered property - Like a car. You could take care of it or not. Trash it or now. You could bash it with a sledge hammer or not. But if you wanted to drive it on public roads, you had to make sure it was safe. And if you bashed your neighbor’s car, you would go to jail.

When did this get all twisted?
