For the first time since it opened in 1964, a mysterious Mormon landmark in the San Francisco Bay Area will be open to the public for a limited time before its rededication.

The newly renovated Mormon Temple in the Oakland Hills section of Oakland, California, is having an open house for a few weeks.

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints kept the temple closed for the past 14 months in order to complete renovations.

The landmark, which was first built in the 1960s, also serves as an FAA beacon which helps incoming planes navigate their landings, according to Architectural Digest.

I can’t wait to hear what you think of the Masons...

“No windows? That’s creepy right there.”

That’s another thing that Joey Smith lifted from the freemasons. Can’t keep your secrets if anyone can just walk by and peek at what you are doing in your secret ceremonies.

...secretive Mormon Temple, in California

As opposed to the non-secretive Mormon Temples throughout the east of the World?

Thanks - I don’t remember that one.

I gave somebody a couple links to old Christian Bible Prophecy movies a couple weeks ago.

They watched them. Good thing. The movies are gone, now.

I understand, though.

Did they have a special couch or bench in the wedding room?

I am quite capable of distinguish between a religious based civic organization and a cult.

I’ve never perceived Freemasonry as ‘religion’ or ‘religous-based’. I see it as a philosophy, and a system of thought and ideals geared toward self-improvement/-advancement.

Of course, one could say the same about religions; and as I’ve said before, the Mormon people I’ve met have been of exemplary character, good citizens, good friends and parents.

I just find their architecture appalling ;-)

My father was a Mason. My granddaughters are Mormons (separate sect of the the LDS). Big difference in many, many ways. Looks good from the outside, big problems on on the inside.

There are ‘big problems’ on the inside of every human organization. And many of the people involved in those organizations aren’t touched by the problems at all. The value that they take is bigger than - and beyond - the mere institution.

None of us knows what religious or spiritual viewpoint might be useful and valuable to another person at any point in life. We may wish otherwise for them - I might, for instance, prefer that my child not become a Roman Catholic or a Mormon - but it’s ultimately none of our or my business. As long as people are not involved in illegal activity or coercing others in criminal ways, I have to trust that God has ways of getting to individuals that I’m not willing to second guess.

If we start deciding that a particular religion offends us and we must do something to ‘stop’ it, where will that end? We live in a culture right now where many believe that *any* religious belief is a ‘mental illness’.

Sacred not secret

The SECRET part is trying to find anything done inside it in any LDS scripture

I will be away from my sources for a week or so, having only an IPad at hand

You other folks will have to go it alone
