For impatient travelers, the next wave of air transportation could be a game-changer. Aerospace company Hermeus Corporation recently announced that it has obtained funding to pursue development of a plane that could travel five times faster than the speed of sound, getting passengers from New York to London in just 90 minutes. But it won't be a cheap flight, and the idea isn't without some baggage.
The venture, which was founded by former employees of private space travel companies like Elon Musks SpaceX and Jeff Bezoss Blue Origin, is seeking to craft a plane that can travel at Mach 5 and reach a cruising speed of 3300 mph.
That ambition will likely take years to materialize. Hermeus co-founder and CEO AJ Piplica told CNN that development is projected to last a decade. He anticipated one-way tickets will cost in the range of $3000.
It currently takes about seven hours to travel from New York to London. Previously, travelers were able to cut that time down to roughly four hours, traveling at twice the speed of sound in the supersonic Concorde jet. High fuel consumption and expensive tickets led to the retirement of the aircraft in 2003. Whether Hermeus can overcome the environmental concerns of such high-octane travel and gather enough passengers willing to pay a premium for less time spent in the air remains to be seen.
Will take quite an airframe to do that on a continual basis.
well played and very true........
The flight would take far less time than the process.
“Could” but “won’t.”
Until the sonic boom problem is mitigated, this is just science fiction.
Plus, the Concorde established that...
1. Government regulators hate supersonic.
2. Passengers will pay a little more for a faster flight but not a lot more.
On that train all graphite and glitter
Undersea by rail
Ninety minutes from New York to Paris
Well by seventy-six we’ll be A.O.K
What a beautiful world this will be
What a glorious time to be free
I’ve been hearing about these hypersonic jets since the Reagan administration - lots of talk, no action. I was a teenager when President Reagan talked about a new Orient Express, capable of flying from Washington to Tokyo in 2 hours - I expect I’ll be dead of old age before any such thing is ever built. The early 20th century’s pace of technological innovation is over.
What a great album “The Nightfly” was.
Walk Between the Raindrops is my favorite.
This can’t be true. Cow Fartz Cortez says we’re going to eliminate all air travel in the next ten years.
Done with the “yewwwww” and most of the ‘Yoops’.
“” “” Will take quite an airframe to do that on a continual basis.”” “”
Not really. It is not impossible but I don’t believe the ticket would cost 3k. The supersonic flight didn’t work because of high cost and due to the fact that actual flight time is not that much a factor in your trip duration nowadays. There is no reason to pay multiple times more to shorten your flight for minutes when you’d spend hours in airports anyway. The same is true and more so for hypersonic flights.
Oh, I think they'll still find a way to lose it.
Wouldnt it be easier just to not get stuck in New York in the first place?
Let’s see... 2-1/2 hrs waiting in line to deposit your luggage, then waiting in line for PSA, waiting at the gate, then at least another half an hour sitting on the tarmac - then 90 minutes in the air, en route to London - then landing, taxiing, retrieving your luggage, getting through Customs...
No, the elite supersonic service will include new and exclusive terminals and procedures suitably streamlined. High speed flights will have priority with air traffic control as they essentially do now. The traveling masses will get none of this.
Which is why in Europe I try to take trains instead of flying, even though flying is cheaper.
It would take much longer than 90 min. to get me aboard the plane, even to the airport.
This really isn’t that big a deal.
The idiot savant who can get people onto their flights, through TSA unmolested, in under 90 minutes, is the one who’s gonna deserve the flipping Nobel prize.
I actually use trains to travel was thin cities in Europe and use car to travel between cities and countries.
was thin = within
