the down side of a photographic memory is that it tends to fade as the person ages.

The claim is that "eidetic memory is typically found only in young children, as it is virtually nonexistent in adults", and there is great skepticism about the existence of "photographic memory".

HOWEVER! I can report that until my middle years in college, I had a semi-eidetic memory. It worked pretty much as advertised on certain things that I was interested in [books, equations and mathematical stuff], but not on other things that I was disinterested in.

It was quite useful in tests - I didn't have to write the answers on my arm - I could just pull the page up in my mind and look at it.

The "fading" that you mentioned actually happened to me to some extent, Chickensoup.

However, my diagnosis of the fading is that my mind became "full" [too many info photos], without the room to effortlessly store the info as in the past. This "fullness" has not disabled my mind in any way, though. I'm just aware that I can't store info exactly like I did when I was younger.

I still can use it on occasion, just as long as I don't try to rely on it to store too much new information.

I suspect that your engineer may not have been able to analyse what was going wrong with his beautiful tool.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eidetic_memory

Eidetic memory (eye-DET-ik; sometimes called photographic memory) is an ability to recall images from memory vividly after only a few instances of exposure, with high precision for a brief time after exposure, without using a mnemonic device.

Although the terms eidetic memory and photographic memory are popularly used interchangeably, they are also distinguished, with eidetic memory referring to the ability to view memories like photographs for a few minutes, and photographic memory referring to the ability to recall pages of text or numbers, or similar, in great detail.

When the concepts are distinguished, eidetic memory is reported to occur in a small number of children and as something generally not found in adults, while true photographic memory has never been demonstrated to exist.

“If he finds the daily double late in the first round I figure his challenger is psyched out.”

The only game I’ve seen so far where the second place was close involved a player who had been an alternate for the prior day’s taping. He was able to watch 5 shows, so unlike nearly all other contestants, he had a chance to digest the game play, sleep on it, and came in more ready to play the game on Holzhauer’s terms than nearly any contestant so far. His second place finish was by far the highest second place in Jeopardy history.

I have a friend who was a five-time Jeopardy winner when that was the limit, and who also won a Tournament of Champions. He pointed out how important the buzzer timing is, and that while most Jeopardy contestants can come up with the right “question” for most subjects, Holzhauer is exceptional and now has the timing down really well. Until another contestant can match the timing of Holzhauer and is not “psyched out” but instead has had time to understand and adopt his approach, he will continue to win. I would be surprised if he is defeated by anyone who has not seen him on broadcasts of at least his earliest games. If he was defeated before the recordings ended for this season, it would likely be another person who sat through a daily taping session and came back for the first session of the next day - so only on a Monday. And now we know it was not today.

“While Holzhauer has improved ratings I wonder if the increased ad revenue matches his winnings?”

Just read an article that the week of May 5 ratings were up 40% over a year ago. I think the producers are pretty happy, and can afford his winnings.

I am surprised word of his victories had not leaked out from the audience. Did Ken’s victories or any past Tournament results leak?

If James hit $2 M , where is the leak.. ‘rumor’ with game # details & $ amount. If he continued to what will air in June or July?

I read tapings are every other week , two days , five shows a day.

I have views of the audience. I have not seen reports of James’ success. Number of wins, total $$$ wins or reports that he finally lost at most recent taping..

Now we know. He lost - on a Monday. And the show was taped before any of his shows aired. Both players were playing his game. Reports that it was taped on March 12, which was a Tuesday, so with tapings on Tuesdays and Wednesdays the contestants were likely in the alternate pool from the prior Wednesday tape date. They thus had almost a week to internalize and prepare to play the game according to his strategy, which they did. Along with the winner being someone who did some serious analysis of the game in writing her thesis.

It will be interesting if the winner will maintain his strategy and go a long way, or be a one hit wonder like the woman who beat Jennings. I think she will go far.

I smell a fix...or a deliberate loss.....its beyond coincidence that e loses just before beating jennings.....

thats my opinion anyway....

tv shows are like the nba, nfl, etc...courts have said that they can make up their own rules and changes they want ......

I don’t think there was a fix. If you’ve been watching the show you may have noticed how many of the players were a bit overwhelmed by his play style which was unlike any before, which seemed to have psyched them out to some degree. I’ve noticed that at least one Monday player each week seemed to get it and at least compete for a while. Tonight there were two people that clearly were playing his game and I believe they would have sat through the prior Wednesday taping and seen him win five games with some closer than others, then had at least 6 days to digest the style so they were prepared.

That being said, the first Daily Double showing up on his first pick seemed unusual and stopped him from the opportunity to build a big amount to double. He had analyzed the likely positions for the Daily Double and had played the last over 30 games so his choice should have been very well thought out to pick a position unlikely to be the DD spot in the first round. Honestly it was in the shows interest to have him win and make new records as the ratings were way up.

IMO...a deliberate loss.
It would set up a good " Tournament of Champions" between himself, Jennings and whoever is in third place. An absolute ratings bonanza with some ridiculous amount of money for the winner.

Disclaimer....I did not see his final show

Our ABC/NBC dual affiliate, WBOY Clarksburg, WV “experienced technical difficulties” during its airing. The station later announced it would be broadcast at 4:00AM Tuesday, but.........no way.
