Over 1,500 pro-marriage equality supporters gathered outside Taiwans legislature earlier this week as lawmakers tried to smooth out differences among three competing draft bills on same-sex marriage. Many of the protesters are hoping to be able to legally marry their same-sex partners on May 24, the deadline to legalize homosexual marriages mandated by Taiwans constitutional court in a landmark ruling in 2017.
Gay rights organizations had hoped the government would legalize same-sex marriage by directly amending marriage clauses in the civil code, a step considered by many as the truest form of equality. However, the central government and Taiwans ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) failed to propose any law or changes that would pave the way for the legalization of gay marriages following the court ruling.
With the lack of government action, anti-marriage equality groups initiated a number of referendums last year and voters overwhelmingly backed the notion of defining marriage purely as a union between a man and a woman, leaving little support for the government to legalize gay marriages.
On Friday, the legislature will vote on three draft bills to determine the fate of Taiwans three-decade-long fight for marriage equality.

Taiwan would be the first Asian country to do this.
I think that’s a sign to the ChiComs that it’s safe to invade now.
That’s how it would be taken by the PRC indeed.
God needs to apologize for what he did to Sodom. Just kidding. He needs to do the same thing again.
People who parrot this meme, IMHO, need to apologize for not being a better bible reader. Things have to be way further along even than this before the brimstone becomes an option.
The coming time of trouble is said in the Bible to make Sodom and even the Great Flood seem like a cakewalk by comparison.
Unparalleled ruin and chaos such as we’ve never seen....such as has not been from the beginning of the world.... War, earthquakes, famine, upheavals in nature, unleashed winds, plagues and other such crises...bowl after bowl of divine wrath and of bloody strife....and the darkness of a world in rebellion... all the elements of strife among men will be let loose.
Thus far God has patiently blunted the full impact of destructive power, but at the end of the age, once and for all, God will lift the restraint and expose the true reality that is the dark underside of mans rebellion.
It is marriage inequality.
They had the same rights all along, and did not want to avail themselves of them.
Whatever the case, there are two things we can count on. Death and taxes. Just kidding. Death, and then God’s judgement. It doesn’t get any better or worse than that.
I have to agree. Sodom was pretty bad even by today’s standards.
The danger risks becoming that kind of avalanche when it completely controls the political sphere, and we get a “men of the city” situation. That’s one of the most ominous phrases to me in the account.
By that point, even the “Abrahamic bargain” will have failed. And it was a generous bargain: If a mere 10 righteous men (meaning they believed in God for salvation) were left, the city would be spared.
The church often shows its best under pressure, however. A church that’s just a religious society “trying to get along in the world” won’t do all that well, but one which will cry out to God for salvation, that knows that it’s weak (but that God is strong) will find salvation. We can’t just politically push back or even mostly politically push back. We must spiritually push back. We must understand the spiritual dynamics of the problem and, in the Lord, provide credible havens for salvation.
I looked up cakewalk in a concordance and found nothing.
