FULL TITLE: Hollywood mourns one of its greatest stars as wholesome screen icon Doris Day dies of pneumonia aged 97

Hollywood legend Doris Day has died at the age of 97.

Her death was announced by her charity, the Doris Day Animal Foundation, on Monday.

The foundation said in a statement that she was surrounded by close friends and 'had been in excellent physical health for her age, until recently contracting a serious case of pneumonia.'

She died at her estate home in Carmel Valley, California, where she has lived in solitude for the last several decades with her dozens of pets.

The charity also revealed that 'her wishes were that she have no funeral or memorial service and no grave marker.' Instead, she wanted fans to donate to the charity she founded to save animals.

Day charmed America in the 40s, 50s, and 60s, starring in an astonishing 39 films in just 20 years. On screen, she was a bright-eyed goody two-shoes and she often referred to herself as 'America's virgin'.

Her personal life, however, was marred by darker episodes.

All four of her marriages collapsed; her first husband beat her, the second left her, the third squandered her fortune and her fourth felt overlooked by her for her dogs.

She also suffered a bout of mental illness in 1950s at the height of her career.

But her greatest loss was the death of her only child, Terry, in 2004. He died aged 64 after battling melanoma.

In recent years, Day was seldom seen publicly.

“My mother called her the Perpetual Virgin. “

Unlike today’s Hollyweird actresses who are perpetual whores and proud of it.

My how times have changed.

A free piece of internet advice (comes with a money back gar-en-tee) - If you are 55 and older, talk to your doc about getting a pneumonia vaccine. It is the FIFTH leading cause of death for seniors.

As a teenager, growing up in the sixties, I thought she and her movies were square and out of touch with reality. I’ve grown to admire her and her accomplishments as time went by. Oh yeah, and one heck of a great singer.

My mother called her the Perpetual Virgin.

Look at me, I'm Sandra Dee, lousy with virginity
Won't go to bed till I'm legally wed, I can't, I'm Sandra Dee
Watch it, hey, I'm Doris Day, I was not brought up that way
Won't come across, even Rock Hudson lost his heart to Doris Day

I don't drink or swear, I won't rat my hair,
I get ill from one cigarette;
Keep your filthy paws off my silky drawers.
Would you pull that crap with Annette?

As for you, Troy Donahue, I know what you wanna do
You got your crust, I'm no object of lust, I'm just plain Sandra Dee.
Elvis, Elvis, let me be,
Keep that pelvis far from me.
Just keep your cool, now you're starting to drool ...
Hey, fungu, I'm Sandra Dee.

I was wondering why I was not seeing a bigger deal made of Doris Day’s passing. I saw nothing about it on Drudge or Fox.
Then I realized that the majority of people online are not old enough to have made a strong bond with Doris, or other actors of that era. Doris, like host Johnny Carson retreated from the spotlight right after retirement. If you didn’t know about her 30 years ago, chances are, you never would now.

Paul McCartney became a good friend of Doris back in the 60’s. There are things about life that only another extremely
famous person would know, firsthand. They had that bond.

Doris was quite a good singer too.
Semi-bluesy when she wanted to be. Sort of like Adelle is now.

Don’t despair. Amy Adams is the highest
paid actress in the world. And a Perpetual
Virgin for our times. Her real name is ...
wait for it ... Caserma Ederle!

It sounds like she lived a rather lonely life in her later years. Sad for such a lovely and vivacious lady.

Doris Day projected a persona that would negatively influence the desired behavior of the millenials.

She was a talented singer and actress that gave us young men the heart throbs and desire to find a girl just like her.

Thanks, Doris, for the wonderful life you portrayed and the inspiration you gave to us!
