A government report released Thursday said kratom was a cause in 91 overdose deaths in 27 states. Officials previously said they knew of 44 nationally.

Most who died had also taken heroin, fentanyl or other drugs. But kratom was the only substance detected in seven of the deaths.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported the numbers after combing through death certificates and toxicology reports from an 18-month period.

Kratom comes from a plant native to Southeast Asia. It is sold in capsules and powders with claims that it helps ease pain, anxiety and drug dependence.

So its the drugo rdoses killing people, not this supplement.

They may think the supplement is more powerful in stopping addiction than it might be for some people and some drugs.

Never tried the stuff but looked into it for pain. Big pharmaceutical companies almost got it banned awhile back

I figure they’ll try again

I’ve spent my entire life to this point doing medicine and science. I’m very open to any kind of therapy, if it works. That said, everyone needs to remember that ‘medicines’ in the beginning were all botanicals. I’ve been to the still preserved original botanical gardens of the oldest medical school in Europe, and there is no question that specific plants, herbs, etc., have powerful biological effects.

That said, just like with modern pharmaceuticals, those biological effects can be positive, AND they can be negative.

My point is that people need to be careful with anything that has biological activity. Sometimes they are beneficial, and sometimes they can be lethal. It’s just reality.

All drugs have negative side effects. Best not to do them at all unless the alternative is worse.

91/350,000,000=0.00000026% Epidemic my posterior.

I have taken kratom to help with chronic back pain, and sciatica. It helped a lot.

It took me 4 months to get off of gabapentin, that my doctor had prescribed 7 years ago for sciatica, before they made it a Schedule 1 drug. That IS physically addictive and cannot be kicked cold turkey.

Kratom does give a very slight mood shift.

Mixing any set of euphoric substances can create problems. Having been a Drug and Alcohol counselor, I soon realized that a certain segment of our species will search for something to change their reality. Why else would someone decide that licking a Colorado tree frog was a really good idea?

Not wrong, you don’t know that.

they said most died had also taken heroin and fentanyl and other drugs. Heroin and fentanyl are the big ones people easily overdose and die from.

the seven they didnt detect other drugs in doesnt mean its from kratom or that they hadnt used other drugs.

I know people who have kicked opiates and alcohol addiction using only kratom.. it connects with the same sensors that heroin and icy do but doesn’t have the huge hallucinations... big pharma can’t have that can they?

One of my Cavalier spaniels is on gabapentin daily for "chiari syndrome" (skull displacement of the lower brain which puts pressure on the spinal column, an inbred condition). I was always amused by the label warning that ceasing dosage may lead to suicidal thoughts. Not been an issue w/ my dog, but I see your note here about "cannot be kicked cold turkey" -- just wow.

We've moderated her condition with combination of gabapentin (very low dosage), prednisone, and acupuncture.

Has worked so far, and she's mobile and happy.
