It was a great time for great cars. They were everywhere.

I had a couple of Mustangs back then. One, especially, I should have kept. Wish I had a time machine to go back, LOL.

The other looked like this (mine was this color with these stripes - factory aluminum wheels though) - I did not have the spoiler until later and never had the rear window slats - hard to find then:

I could drive down the street in front of high school and hear this on the Top 40 local radio:

But seriously, I see a few Tesla 3’s in the parking lot here (engineering facility), and I don’t see what gets people so excited.

...

If you live close to a Tesla store test drive one. It doesn’t cost anything and there’s no sales pressure, because they aren’t dealerships.

Tesla is also in the process of buying Maxwell, which should give them a significant boost in battery production and capacity, which could give another reason for them to delay expansion until that acquisition is complete.

You raise a great point about Tesla purchasing Maxwell, and that could not only bring extra manufacturing capacity online, Maxwell has some new battery formulations in development that could increase the power density of Tesla's battery packs, and require a different manufacturing facility to accommodate.

So a wait-and-see attitude on this new chemistry would make sense if the new technology is on the cusp of being commercially exploitable.

The only day of the month I regret the car is the car payment day...

The price of the toys is all that separates, the men from the boys.

Recent Musk Tweets about this issue:

Incorrect. Pana cell lines at Giga are only at ~24GWh/yr & have been a constraint on Model 3 output since July. No choice but to use other suppliers for Powerwall/Powerpack cells. Tesla won’t spend money on more capacity until existing lines get closer to 35GWh theoretical.

There is 35 GWh/yr “theoretical capacity”, but actual max output is ~2/3. It was physically impossible to make more Model 3’s in Q1 due to cell constraints.

Wow, a lot of people don’t know much about how manufacturing works! If you have peak capacity of X, actual average weekly output will necessarily be less than X. First 6-12 months, it will be much less than X. Impossible to predict exact production ramp S-curve.

No, how could this be? I keep hearing about the awesome sales numbers of Tesla, they’re right up there with Toyota. A guy from my locale ripped my head off when I said that nobody wants this thing. I asked him, “I’m from the same locale you are, where’s the damn Teslas? I’ve seen like three of them ever.”

Yeah, I want a BMW SUV but I’m on a Toyota 4-Runner income. Kind of a problem, eh?

Totally agree with you. How many of us would turn down a BMW M3 if we won it in a raffle? At the same time, how many of us own one or are really considering buying one at our income level? That’s not two of the same thing. The guy who works the floor at Target dreams of the day he can buy something nicer than a used Geo Metro. That’s the guy that you want to market to and he figures into your business projections? If so, Elon has a fundamental problem with his business model. The $9/hr guy at Target isn’t getting one unless he carjacks one.

Have we hit peak Tesla?

This company has been polishing the brass on the Titanic for 3 years now. They can only keep an executive for longer than 18 months if they hold him at gunpoint. In a year or two when this thing goes the way of the A380, all the Tesla fanbois will be going, "Well that came out of the blue!" This is Theranos all over again. Elon and his groupies see what they want to see. You can want and want and want something all day long. In the end, if you're headed east looking for a sunset, you've got a problem.

Elon must think that when I was a college student, I wanted to live in crappy apartment and eat food that came from the grocery store bargain bin.

I had an aunt that owned one, don’t ask me why. In the neighborhood it was real easy to direct anybody to her house, “She’s the one that owns the Pacer.”

I always like the Lexus December to Remember Sales Event.

When I can’t figure out what to get people for Christmas, I just go out and buy $60,000 Lexus SUV’s for everyone.

Boy are they surprised!
