Growing up, Kelly Pietkiwicz, 29, wasnt a runner. Sprints were her least favorite form of exercise, and she gravitated to swimming and competitive cheerleading instead.
But while she was preparing to move to Nashville, Tennessee, from Memphis after college, she wanted to find a way to keep connected to Memphis.
The answer? The St. Judes Half Marathon.
St. Judes Research Hospital is located in Memphis, and I had volunteered there, she told Runners World. My sister Micky was also leaving Memphis, and we both felt like we needed a way to keep Memphis a part of our lives.
So when she saw friends posting on social media posting about the race, she jokingly suggested to her sister that they should do it.
Wed never been runners. But I just thought, Lets try and see. It would be time wed get to spend together, and we could hold each other accountable, she said.
The Start of Some Scary Symptoms
On the recommendation of a friend, Pietkiwicz and her sister started following Hal Higdons training program to prepare. At first, training went well.
But then she started to experience painful and heavy periods, as well as lightheadedness and painful bowel movements. She tried to stick to the program, but the symptoms hindered her running.
There were many runs that I would start and then have to find a bathroom five minutes in, or halfway through, or stop completely, she said. And some mornings I would wake up and just know, I cannot run today.
She was able to push through, completing her first half in December 2017.
But her symptoms continued to get worse.

My first wife had it. Extremely painful.

Your right.
Had a couple of girlfriends with this. Both had to have their ovaries removed before the age of thirty.
Hormone replacement therapy did a number on their sanity.
What advice do you offer for this runner?

I had this. Results=No kids. I wish I had been diagnosed and treated as a late teen.
Makes a person miserable.
We needed a way to keep Memphis part of our lives
The part about her painful bowel movements would help keep Chicago as part of her life.
Why would anyone but her Dr. need to know any of this?
With social media exposure, others with this problem may recognize the symptoms.
That’s an excuse, not a reason.
Me too, never treated because my doc just assumed I was whining.
People have been writing about medical issues and how they deal with them since forever. What’s your objection?
Men like women to suffer in silence. The public arena is all for their problems, not ours.
My first wife had it as well. A couple of laser surgeries didn’t help. Of course she was told after bearing our two children that her symptoms would subside. Nope. 6 months to the day our 2nd child was born, she elected for a complete hysterectomy. And then came the hormone replacement therapy.... It seemed to make matters worse...
Depends on who that enemy was..Any DemoRAT would do.
But Seriously DO NOT TAKE THE NEW FDA DRUG ORRISA. It is Black Boxed ON APPROVAL. BONE DENSITY, messes with hormones CAN Cause CANCER. As Doug Marcaida of Forged in Fire would say IT WILL KILL, and so it should be Labeled.
Venus Williams has Sjorgens which slowly destroys organs, lady GA-GA Fibromyalgia. Just because they are famous doesn’t mean they are exempt for disease. Just means they get better healthcare and Pain meds. The rest of us don’t get.
Joey Feek a devout Christian, singer part of the Joey and Rory Feek Country duo died of Stage 4 Colon cancer. She went through 3 bouts of it before the docs said no more treatment. She left a barely 2 yr old Downs daughter Indiana Boone Feek and her husband Rory. She is buried on their farm in Tennessee.
My niece is Dying of Lupus, Lyme’s, Kidney, Liver, Lung damage from the Lupus meds. She nearly had a Heart Attack a few days ago, as some A$$ doctor wanted to line his pockets with a Sleep Study test, and took her off her Oxygen and she didn’t have a Script to refill. Medicare/Tenn-care is crap healthcare. She has a 13 yr old son with Duchenes MD, the worst of the 7 types, he’s early onset. It’s genetic, and will destroy his organs slowly especially after he reaches wheelchair stage. Has a live span maybe to late 30’s. They live in a small rural town, where medical care is the Pits to begin with. Not even a Cardiac ER Unit at a hospital any where near Dollywood.
