Notice I posted this to the cheese hole, in hopes of a couple of responses. Prove me wrong...let's see if this thread hits 100...heck 50 from the cheesehole of chat.

As a follow-up to yesterday's post : Tech Ping: Chickensoup is in Hot Water. Computer Died a Horrible Death. Need to Save Its Soul!

http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-chat/3739180/posts

I am now in the market for a new computer.

Your recommendations.

I like powerful computers, money is less of an issue than configuration. This laptop is only moving between desk and home.

Got to haves: 17" screen really fast nice color Good fans and airflows removable battery usb ports 2 or 3 Ethernet port card port for camera cards and others blue tooth wifi

Nice to have CD drive Touch screen doesn't flipping matter.

Sadly I have to move to WIN 10 and upgrade office from 2003.

Your recommendations and experiences would be great.

A big bowl of chickensoup to the recommendation that I choose!

Listing hardware without use-cases isn’t helpful.

What do you plan on doing with it?

You mention going from work to home. Do you do gaming at home? Or is this mainly a work and web browser machine?

For running MS Office and a web browser you really don’t need much. That said, I’d recommend 8GB RAM and a solid-state-disk, you’ll have responsive machine - although you’ll pay for the SSD.

You can get an adequate performing machine for $4-500. If you want long battery life, an SSD, better graphics, higher resolution display, etc.. then more like $1000.

been hard to find one. My dead computer looked like my old Viao and both had extra sticks of memeory

I am seeing many computers now have a ss disk for programs and a hard drive for data.

My problem with purchasing a computer is that I bought the Viao back when they first came out and then purchased the Acer about 6 years ago using the vaio specs

and the laptop world has changed

“Sadly I have to move to WIN 10 and upgrade office from 2003.”

I hold on to my Office 2003 CDs like Grim Death. When we’ve relocated, they’ve gone in my purse. (Not even my jewelry goes in my purse.) DH was forced to rent that evil 365 for his Windows 10 system, and it’s a nightmare. When/if I ever need to go there, I’ll go full Luddite and revert to pen and paper.

My “new” laptop is a refurbished Dell Windows 7 system via an Amazon vendor, on docking station with USB keyboard and large monitor. Almost two years old, and kicking ass (knock wood).

I wish you luck, as shopping for a computer can be frustrating.

If you want it to be ‘really fast’, buy the Dell 5775 above and add the following $30 SSD to it:

Check out Libre Office.

It's fully compatible. My co-workers here in a windows-centric office don't know that I use it exclusively. I exchange docs/spreadsheets/etc with them on a daily basis.

And it's free.

I just looked at their website. I notice a god-forsaken “ribbon” menu in one of the word processing illustrations. To quote Trump, “Not gonna happen”.

”Got to haves: 17” screen ”

I think Samsonite makes those in ballistic nylon.

You’re getting older, so get the one with wheels.

Spinner wheels are the best!

My dad actually had one of those Acer monsters. He about cried when it gave up the ghost since there was nothing like it to replace it. Was a ok performer but the screen was A+++. The screen hinges were massive.

Yes but dragging the laptop around the house is what kills it. My sister kills a laptop every 3 years. They fall, they suck in dust from the furniture, they overheat from being on a bed or couch or ottoman.
I frequently use my laptop to remote into my desktop which means my laptop has become my desktop. It’s just easier to use my desktop setup. So even though I am on my laptop, I am actually using my desktop machine.
One of the reasons I like my desktop is dual large monitors.
Unless you are running games like Call of Duty, graphics are irrelevant these days.
My wife uses a laptop exclusively but it generally stays in the same place all the time and she uses a cooling pad. I do play Call of Duty on her laptop so it has a better GPU.
And I am not directing this to you directly but to people who are considering a new machine. It’s what I tell everyone.
