Hungary has struck an agreement with Gazprom to buy and store its 2020 gas supplies earlier than usual this year to offset the risk of Russia failing to agree transit terms with Ukraine, state news agency MTI reported on Thursday.

Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto told MTI after meeting Gazprom chief executive Alexei Miller in Moscow that Hungary would continue to receive supplies from Austrian pipelines, which carry Russian gas piped through other routes.

Hungary's recently expanded 6.3 billion cubic metre storage capacity can guarantee safe supply through 2020, he said.

Kinda like buying a second spare tire, kills the motivation of all of your tires to "go flat" at the worst possible time.

They know they can be replaced without a hitch.

This and the completion of Nord Stream 2 might put the Ukrainians out of the gas stealing business next winter.

I thought it was the Krauts who were sucking up to the Russians.

On the other hand there is a huge recycling opportunity.
721 miles of 4 feet wide quality steel pipes worth a fortune as scrap metal.
Not that lucrative and lasting as a gas transit of course but one should utilize every opportunity possible.
That would make some Ukie politicos retire into Florida mansions they love so much.
And they would vote Democrat to their last day upon arrival.

The Fatherland is the western terminus of the Nordstream pipelines. The better to control the rest of Europe.

That’s a brilliant allegory to describe the whole thing.

It is quite spectacular how Nuland was trying to weaken both Germany and Russia by means of Ukraine and such a backfire.
The cost to US influence aside Ukraine is the ultimate loser of this situation. Totally on the wrong side of history, AGAIN.

Losing the Russian gas shipments will put a large hole in the Ukraine's already leaky economy.

I see an IMF imposed austerity program in Ukraine's future.

When you are a major European country and the government had to lower the poverty line to $38 a week just nominally higher than UN poverty standard for sub-Saharan Africa you can’t have any more austerity.
And still about 30% don’t make even that much anymore. More than 2/3 don’t make that much after taxes.

What you're saying is that Ukraine is already on its knees with a beggars bowl in outstretched hands to the West...exactly as some of us here predicted in 2013.
