Want to cut your risk of dementia? Moisturize your skin, UCSF researchers say

Researchers at UC San Francisco announced this week that age-damaged skin in older adults may be contributing to a wide range of chronic, age-related conditions that include heart disease and Alzheimer’s disease.

Here’s what the dermatological researchers said they learned from their work with the San Francisco Veterans Administration Health System: As aging skin begins to break down, the immune system releases small proteins known as cytokines to signal that there’s inflammation in damaged areas of the skin. These tiny inflammatory cytokines can leak into the body’s circulation system, and if there are enough of them, they trigger body-wide inflammation. That triggers so called “inflamm-aging” among older adults.

At the end of the experiment, they once again measured cytokine levels in all subjects, Man said, and the seniors who used the skin cream saw dramatic reductions in three cytokines that have been linked to age-related chronic diseases. The three were interleukin-1 beta, interleukin-6 and tumor necrosis factor.

Among adults who used the skin cream, cytokine levels fell nearly to the level of people in their 30s. The study participants, ages 58 to 95, also lowered their skin’s acidity, improved hydration and repaired its permeability.

Mentioning researching in the same sentence as VA makes me think of veterans being used as Ginny pigs for experimentation, in experimenting with veterans hands what else did they do that they wouldn’t dare talk about in a public.
Also when a veteran goes to see his appointed Pakistani doctor does the doctor sell his email to his friends that so happen to have a good deal on hand creme. I use the VA services for medical services since I don’t have insurance but to be honest I really don’t trust them much.

Psilocybin: A Journey Beyond the Fear of Death? In one of the largest and most rigorous clinical investigations of psychedelic drugs to date, researchers at Johns Hopkins University and New York University have found that a single dose of psilocybin—the psychoactive compound in “magic” mushrooms—substantially diminished depression and anxiety in patients with advanced cancer.
I'm not a fan of recreational drug use. I think war on drugs harmed more than helped society. I don't like government intervening with their deep pockets in doctor patient relationships or even to medicate myself.

But this article, ConservativeMind posted interest me as I am a dementia care giver. I was flippant about your article because an article I read about psilocybin. My wife wants to eat a vegan diet I told her to use mushrooms instead of phony meat. I'm not even vegetarian but I like mushrooms.

“They devised an experiment to test out that hypothesis, asking one group of seniors to apply a specified amount of skin cream twice daily over 30 days. They also had groups of young people and seniors who did not use any of the lotion.”

Oh, please: Cease the snake-oil references.

I know what causes dementia. Research systemic inflammation, eliminate the causes from your lifestyle and let the toilet in your cranium flush itself to prevent dementia.

That’ll be $10,000, thank you very much. /s

Seriously, though: It’s the best free advice you’ll ever receive. Merry Xmas, FReepers. I know two guys who just buried their fathers, both from complications from dementia.

Dementia is a symptom, not a disease. Unfortunately the diagnosis is much too late to do anything about it with current medical technology. That will NOT change in our lifetimes.

You know, I find the two worst things about getting old are:

1) Loss of memory, and

2) Uh, um, mmm, ...

I skimmed but didn’t see what they were putting on the seniors’ skin. Any “moisturizer” sold in stores, or “lotion,” is a chemical concoction of carcinogens and neurotoxins in some form of oil. You need to know that your skin does take things into your bloodstream and even brain. So while keeping skin healthy, cared for, and hydrated, may now be proven to help fight body inflammation, don’t put chemical crap on your skin.

Do not put anything on your skin that you wouldn’t eat. Coconut oil and such are the best moisturizers. Shea butter is amazing for the driest parts of skin, and argan is good for the hair.

Hericium is excellent, along with Ganoderma lucidum, Coriolus, and chaga, inonotus.
