The consequences deriving from the allegedly false hate crime report of Jussie Smollett are vast. The expression "collateral damage" is appropriate.
Whatever his fate, now that he was written out of his part on a TV show and indicted for 16 felony counts related to his allegedly false reporting of a hate crime, dozens of other people are suffering career catastrophes derived from the scandal's aftermath.
At least 50 employees may have been fired from Northwestern Memorial Hospital for accessing the medical profile and records of "Empire" actor Jussie Smollett without authorization, sources with knowledge of the situation said.
One of those employees identified simply as Susan, to protect her identity said that with one click of her mouse, she was fired from her job as a surgical nurse last week.

I guess it flushed out a bunch of people who didn’t take their confidentiality oaths seriously.
The computer people at hospitals most likely put flags on the file of any given celebrity and if someone starts poking around they’ll be discovered pretty quickly. But that’s a LOT of people being fired. I’m guessing the hospital would rather do that than face the prospect of HIPPA fines, which might happen anyway.
Replacing nurses is next to impossible. Short sighted move
What a terrible waste of medical talent, productivity and manpower!
How stupid to fire them......why not just a discipline?
There's a bright side though. A lot of jobs just opened up.
They are all continuously warned about privacy.
So Jussie’s race hoax caused large numbers of blacks to lose their jobs. Nice going jackass
Because the records belonged to a person of color not an old white guy.
Curiosity killed the cat but in this case 50 peoples careers.
Notice the ‘hippa’ comments?
Funny how it mattered with Smollett, but doesn’t with conservatives, like Trump. Raw hypocrisy.
first i’ve heard...
:)
They know the rules and the penalties.
I have no sympathy.
Why fire rather than discipline?
Because people will just keep looking.
Replacing nurses is next to impossible. Short sighted move
Imagine that was YOUR families records being pried into.
Nurses are being cranked out by the THOUSANDS every semester.
POS hacks like the 50 can be replaced in one day.
Dont believe me?
Post an ad for 50 open nursing positions, at the same pay rate.
Youll get 5,000 applications
Yep. Academia too, as I was informed in no uncertain terms. Mandatory briefings, papers to sign. Nobody is unaware.
Mind you, at least one of those queries and probably more were perfectly legitimate - they had, after all, a patient who had apparently been beaten in front of them and no way of knowing it was a fake. But 50? Not a chance. Some of them were probably merely curious, but the rest had something to leak - or sell - to the media, which somebody did. Federal offense.
Wasn’t there a story once about a chef at a university chow hall who complained about the soul food being served and got fired because of it? I’m really hazy on the details but remember the chef who got fired was actually black.
