‘Captain Marvel’ on Track for $100 Million-Plus Opening, Rivaling ‘Wonder Woman’
The Wrap ^ | 02/14/19 | Jeremy Fuster

Posted on 02/14/2019 9:06:17 PM PST by Simon Green

Early tracking for Marvel Studios’ “Captain Marvel” is projecting that will film will have an opening weekend of over $100 million when it hits theaters on March 8, which would make it the first big box office hit of 2019.

Aside from “Black Panther”‘s mammoth $201 million opening last year, this film is on pace to be the highest opening for a debut superhero installment in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. By comparison, 2016’s “Doctor Strange” opened to $85 million, while 2014’s “Guardians of the Galaxy” opened to $94 million. This tracking also means that “Captain Marvel” could rival or even top the last film to feature a female superhero, “Wonder Woman,” which opened to $103 million in 2017 and went on to gross $412.5 million domestic and $821 million worldwide

“Captain Marvel” stars Brie Larson as Carol Danvers, an Air Force pilot who was recovered by the Kree after mysterious circumstances and was transformed into the titular superhero at the cost of her memories. After crash landing back on Earth during the 1990s, Carol must recover her past self and save the planet from getting caught in an intergalactic conflict with the help of future SHIELD director Nick Fury.

Though Captain Marvel doesn’t have the advantage of an introductory appearance like Black Panther did in “Captain America: Civil War” or Wonder Woman in “Batman v Superman,” her debut film will be seen as requisite viewing for hardcore Marvel fans as the heroine will play a critical role in “Avengers: Endgame.” Following the cliffhanger ending of “Avengers: Infinity War,” the forthcoming debut of the Captain and her connection to Nick Fury was teased in a post-credits segment, and fans will surely be interested to see why that relationship is so important.

The Marvel version of Captain Marvel was a man although the costume looked similiar. He was one of my favorite super heroes and I still have several of the old Captain Marvel comics from the 70’s. Just another insult to white males.

The lovely young lady starring in this movie, Brie Larson, wants to work with the new Marvel character, Kamala Kahn, a Muslim shape shifter. https://www.cinemablend.com/news/2466961/brie-larson-already-has-a-marvel-hero-in-mind-to-join-captain-marvels-sequel

Why do people keep giving their money to hollywood when they know it will be used politically against them by the leftists who control the film industry?

I just don’t get it.

It will be a test to see who can identify the gay guy first.

Even, what appeared to be a normal, entertaining series, The Rookie, had to, HAD TO, introduce a homo character.

And in keeping with my rule, zero tolerance, no more Rookie for me.

Hard to believe at one time I was totally accepting that there were people with different leanings, now, with in your face attitude, I despise the manipulation.
And now, they are injecting this trash into Agatha Christie stories, for the love of Pete.

I have the boxed set of Vega$ and will watch all of it many times.

No plans of seeing this or pretty much any other modern era junk movie.

A group of 15 ranging in age from 40-68 was discussing this. None of us had seen a movie in the theater in years.

I don’t get it. All of these Marvel movies are redundant.

The last good comic based movie was the dark knight trio in 2012!

Avengers: Endgame. April 26th.

Half of them died at the end of the last movie. This one kills all the rest.

Oh, spoiler alert.

I don’t even bother with those movies anymore.

People who say “It’s just a movie” are welcome to it.

It will probably be good.

Now if it were a Latina, it would be a record breaker.

This movie will not garner more ticket sales than Wonder Woman.

This isn’t a DC vs Marvel comment.

This is a “I am not going to spend a dime on another #MeToo SJW baloney”

Space is cold. So the form fitting suit will send the comic book boys into a new realm.

I don’t know...I still like going to the movies with my wife. We call it “a popcorn dinner.”

There are some good flicks out there. Some are junk. But it is, and always has been, escapism.

I understand our point of few, but I go for the fun of it. To each his own.

(And I am smack-dab in the middle of your age range.)

Problem is, I think this movie’s plot plays significantly into Avengers Endgame.
