Today’s Cryptogram

I ARXC RD TYE RNWYZEITE

CBGCWE RT ELC RNWIGE RE

LID YT YELCZ ARPCD. SIGFRC ZYVRTDYT

You can find this little fun word game, to combat early dementia and senility in us baby boomers, in several daily publications, unfortunately they are copyrighted so we can't use them here. So, we're just going to make up our own. The way it works is a letter stands for another letter. For example: AXYDLBAAXR is LONGFELLOW (does not apply to today's cryptogram). Beware, the game is very addictive. If this is your first time, don't be intimidated.

PLEASE DO NOT post the answer in general comments, but DO post your time and any tips you might give the group on how you solve these puzzles. Puzzle solvers love to hear if you found the CG challenging or easy.

You can certainly send your solution to my private reply, or if you need a hint for today’s Cryptogram.

If you're just starting out on these, be patient, as you'll be proficient in no time.

Solving the puzzle under 8 minutes is good, under 6 very good, under 4 excellent and under two "you're a pro!"

Those of you looking for an added challenge can try to solve one sentence or even one word at a time, i.e. solve the entire first line, then go to the second line etc.

If you need a little help you can copy the cryptogram and paste it to Hal’s Helper below:

You can then work on the puzzle without using pen and paper.

Let me know if you want on or off our Cryptogram Ping List, (currently at 54!)

Solution to our last puzzle:

You just can’t beat the person who never gives up. Babe Ruth

Yesterday’s puzzle was a good one for many of you, (some of whom are getting quite cocky lol). Many picked up on the 5-letter word “NEVER” with the same 2nd and 4th letters. Other’s caught the contraction CAN’T right out of the gate, and it was all downhill from then. Some of you recognized the common letters ETRNAS etc. Please share how you solved yesterday’s puzzle with the group.

Yesterday my first catch was the contraction, followed by “the”. That led to the n and two e’s in never....voila’

Thanks for posting. Fun!

I did these daily for a few years in the ‘70s. This is the first I’ve done since then.

Took about one minute to get my head back in the right place then another two to solve.

The first thing I do is look for an ABCA sequence. If you find one of those you’re half way done. Of course, there are many other “leads” you learn with experience. Eventually, solving is 30% thinking and 70% busy work.

(I see a hint for today’s puzzle in the solution to the last puzzle.)

I’ve asked The Mod to correct the heading, but he or she is probably asleep. Can someone else ask too? :-)

Thanks, I may poke my head in from time to time.

You guys prob do these things, too:

Thinking back I remember it’s fun to try and solve the author’s name first. Assuming it was a name. Finding something along the lines of tyui iopayi (John Nelson) could open up the entire puzzle.

The Wheel of Fortune method is always worth a try. With just a couple letters in place look away and then quickly look back. Now and then the brain does it all for you and delivers the answer in an instant.

I’ve asked the moderator to correct the spelling twice now. Maybe someone else can ask too?

Okay, that was harder. It took 8 minutes. I tinkered around with the one and two letter words until suddenly the name became clear.

Nice one today, not too easy but not too hard. The single letter can only be one choice and the two letters then can’t use that choice. getting the starting letter for the two letter words that share a first and have a different last letter opened the door.

4 min on my phone. That cryptogram helper takes longer when you have to scroll through the letters!

3:30 ...

Was done in under a minute, except I got hung up on the first and third letters of the second word and the first and third letters of the last word (not the author).

Had to list the letters that I hadn't used and started plugging-and-replacing until I made the combination that gave me the second word.

I used to do these every day from the newspaper but I haven’t gotten the local paper in many years. There was always a clue like “T= R”. Do you not include clues?

Haha. I started giving clues at first, but the puzzle solvers here told me to stop.

About the same time, and the same two words were last to get finished.
