New Jerseys paid family leave program may soon soon be expanded big-time, which means you would get paid more for taking time off from your job while caring for a newborn or ill family member.
A bill to beef up paid family leave is now Gov. Phil Murphys desk after it was passed by both houses of the Democratic-controlled Legislature on Thursday.
The program, which covers those who work in New Jersey, is one of just a few in the country. But labor advocates for years have argued it does not reimburse workers enough for wages they lose by taking off from work. They say many low- and middle-income families simply cant afford to take the time off.
Right now, new parents or caregivers can receive up to six weeks of benefits equal to two-thirds of their pay, but capped at $633 a week.
The bill (A3975) would increase the eligibility period from six to 12 weeks and raise the cap on the reimbursement an applicant can receive to 85 percent of their wages up to $859.

And who is going to pay for this?
This is going to sweep the country. We are well on our way to becoming a European-style social democracy.
I think New Jersey should extend Family Leave to 18 years....for the children.
Who are the suckers that are going to carry the load for all of the weeks these people are not working?
.
It’s not much more than the weekly cap on the highest unemployment insurance.

I would be calling the moving trucks & leaving NJ immediately if I had a company there.

Ladies-—you have been lied to: YOU CANNOT HAVE IT ALL.

“And who is going to pay for this?”
All of us NJ employers of course will pay, as long as we stay. It will only be a few months and we will be gone because of this and other disincentives for doing business in the Garden State. There are friendlier places.
This will probably help job seekers past their child bearing years.
Where I live, and this is now law, small business employers now call paid leave “Friday Off”. It’s being abused and you can’t question the employee without threat of some civil rights suit.
So NJ can push this because they know people will start begging the Federal government to make it national.
This family leave idiocy isn't even what is driving my decisions. It's simply a matter of other states offering much better business climates for my clients.
I live in PA and work in NJ. I mentioned this o our owner and he literally buried his face in his palms. He’s no conservative but no liberal either.I’m also getting concerned living so close to NJ in PA as they are flocking to our area in droves. My hope is they’re leaving because they learned their lesson like I did, but probably not.
The column addresses that.
Thank you——I should have read a bit more before I posted.

Kalifornia commies are kicking around the idea of 18 weeks with 100% pay.
