Did Bill Nye just suggest the U.S. will have to annex Canada to grow crops?
National Post ^ | Feb. 1, 2019 | Nick Faris

Earlier this week, the famed TV scientist Bill Nye went on an MSNBC talk show to discuss the economic cost of climate change and the consequences it could levy on rural America.

Nye’s chat with Hardball host Chris Matthews took a surprising turn when the Science Guy started advocating for a U.S. incursion, of sorts, into Canada.

As global temperatures rise, Nye said, “the growing (of crops) in North America is going to have to move north into what would nominally be Canada. We don’t have the infrastructure, we don’t have the railroads and roads to get food from that area to where we need it around the world.

“Of course it can be built,” Nye added, “but the longer we mess around and (don’t) address this problem, the more difficult it’s going to be.”

It wasn’t entirely clear if Nye meant to imply that Canada does not, in fact, have roads to transport crops, or if by using the word “nominally” he was envisioning an apocalyptic future in which the U.S. flexes its military might and annexes us out of self-interest. (If so, it’s worth noting that Gwynne Dwyer, a Canadian journalist and historian, warned of a wealth of similar outcomes that could unfold around the world in his 2008 book Climate Wars: The Fight for Survival as the World Overheats.)

At the least, the MSNBC clip marks the latest chapter in Nye’s colourful history of musing about Canada.

Last March, the Science Guy appeared on stage with Prime Minister Justin Trudeau at a science and innovation panel held at the University of Ottawa, an event at which he said Canada wouldn’t need to keep emitting fossil fuels if it were to embrace the use of renewable energy sources.

Okay, let’s ignore the fact that there’s no proof temperatures will rise THAT significantly in our lifetimes, let alone the fact that we probably aren’t causing it, and let’s just get to the pure idiocy of this statement. Just because temperatures rise DOESN’T MEAN YOUR CLIMATE ALSO BECOMES ARID LIKE A DESERT.

Billy-boy, they have these high temperature humid climates where lots of things grow. They’re call tropical and subtropical climates. Go read a book

So. What he’s saying is climate change is a localized phenomenon? It respects borders by remaining in the US and in selected areas/cities/states and nowhere else?

1. Why should we send food around the world (this is an honest question, I do not get this.

2. Don’t we use planes for stuff?

3. If we had to ‘get food around the world’ why wouldn’t we just invest in building infrastructure?

4. Do we just annex countries now? We certainly don’t own Canada. Don’t they get a say in this?

Guy’s got an engineering degree. You’d think he’d make at least a little effort not to be a total tool. Embarrassing.

1) I'd be willing to take all those fossil fuels off of Canada's hands for them - no charge.

2) I'll issue their PM a receipt & coupon worth 43 bazillion carbon credits.

If they can hook me up with some of that global warming - it's too cold down here.

“its 40 below in the midwest and these lunatics are still talking about global warming???!”

In the church of Goebbels Warming, it’s well known that Goebbels Warming causes it to be extraordinarily cold.

Goebbels Warming causes:

Too much rain, snow, cold, hot, storms
Too little rain, snow, cold, hot, storms
Just the right amount of rain, snow, cold, hot, storms
