HOW NO BORDER WALL CAUSED A HOMELESS CRISIS 2,500 MILES AWAY IN MAINE
FrontPage Mag ^ | 01/10/2019 | Daniel Greenfield

2,500 miles away, Portland, Maine is experiencing a crisis that redefines the nature of the problem and whom it impacts. Illegal border invaders aren’t just from this continent. Anyone who can fly into South America and make their way up to Mexico has a shot at crossing the border and invading America.

Portland shelters, 2,500 miles away, are overloaded by illegal migrants from sub-Saharan Africa who crossed the border and then kept right on going to one of the coldest, but most profitable parts of the country. Portland, like many areas in Maine, attracted migrants because of the generous social safety net that had been set up to help the local population deal with turbulent economic times.

In early December alone, 199 foreigners wanted to get into the shelter system in Portland. 126 of them had come through the southern border, either by illegally invading it or by falsely claiming to be “refugees”.

In 2018, 86% of the people in the shelter system were immigrants. By the end of the year, the number had climbed to a horrifying 90% with Maine families almost crowded out entirely.

Maine’s 16.5% increase and Portland’s staggering 70% rise in homelessness defies the overall economic recovery....

The social services sector employs a growing number of migrants who get profitable government jobs caring for migrants. And there’s every possible incentive for them to continue increasing their numbers.

Even if it means that native Mainers are left out in the cold. Sometimes literally.

I got to spend some time in Downtown Portland in the late 80's w/ a dears friends of mine hubby and wife. Great food, nightlife, and it never went through "Urban Renewal" so it's original character stood, the city was a blast. This is what Buchanan & Savage rail about, Borders, Language, and Culture as I would garner these new Maniac's came in via a not so strong border, may not know the language and via the teachings of Multiculturalism the question begs, will they assimilate like all the 1st gen and 2nd gen Europeans did and how they became the backbone of some of the bloodiest campaigns of WWII and they had no hint of allegiance to their mothers and fathers homelands.

With that said this is chaos and for a reason, aka they own education and now we will out populate you by importing like minded voters (via welfare type programs) to make you/us a political minority for eternity. My guess is many of the left of center progressives will accept and accommodate in Portland, maybe even tax to pay for it. Boomers that are even left of center who will tire of it will quietly retire to low tax southern states and rather than adopt will do what MA transplants did to NH, and now Kalipornia transplants are doing to Idaho, aka bring their progressive values and thrust them upon the natives. Lets hope they don't find out about some of "last refuge" locations that I will not name, message me privately if you want to hear where they are....

re:”There is also a visa overstay problem.

Requiring a return bond on each visa for a low income country visitor might help.”

******

IRC visa overstays have been outpacing illegal entrants. This is why those of us in STEM fields have been competing with illegal aliens for a good few years now.

They were directed to Maine because Maine WAS like life should be. It still is, in most areas, but won’t be much longer.

Whatever is good, clean, and works, liberals destroy.

“It’s amazing they know where to head to get the most generous benefits.”

The cell phone lets them compare notes globally, the same day.

I sat next to Somali on a plane two years ago, and had a long talk to him about immigration.

When he was in Somalia, he considered long and hard where he would go - a few European countries, and a few particular US cities. It is a major item of discussion in Somalia, and towers above other options in the career options of young men. The benefits package was the top factor, but ultimately he chose Sweden, because he was single, and had heard good things about his social prospects there.

After five years, he had been fully supported, and had not been required to work - only to take free Swedish language classes.

He worked off the books for another Somali, and was able to regularly invest in his own businesses that he was developing in Somalia, where he was now a big wheel among family and friends. He owned a growing herd of cattle that was making money, as was an import (into Somalia) operation that he was running (a legal business).

He said that “everybody” back home knew the way into the US (through the border near San Diego), and how to find people to guide them onto benefits quickly. Family reunification was a huge open door for the US, unlike many other countries.

“There’s a lot of places you can cross over easily, with no checkpoint for up to 100 miles inland.”

The $25 billion over five years, represents a detailed program to develop “Operational Control” of the whole border. After analysis, that is what they came up with, given a scenario of relatively unconstrained resources.

It would be about 1,100 miles of hard barrier infrastructure (replacing almost all of what previously existed), thousands of more permanent personnel positions, and some pretty dramatic new technology (sensors, drones, cameras and artificial intelligence monitoring). Beyond five years, robots become a big factor.

As a practical matter, laws and policies need to change to control the immigrant flow, and to assimilate new arrivals - but it would be possible to control the border during a two term Presidency.

Looked up that town, looks like it was invaded too. Only found feel good stories about how wonderful they have been for the town.

Portland used to be beautiful when I went there in the summers in the 70s. My parents built a summer home on Sebago and we loved going to see Twin Lights and have dinner in Portland. I guess it is not as good. We need to build the wall.

Tampa still has too many bums. I was going to my office and someone was mad because I woke him up in front of my office. They sleep wherever they want...

"generous social safety net"

The red states should notify their illegal residents about the rich benefits available in blue states and give a 1-way ticket.

From Sanford north, I think Maine is still ‘The way it should be’, but Southern York County to Freeport and Lewiston-Auburn, it is North Massachusetts.
