Bryan Cranston defends playing quadriplegic in new movie ‘The Upside’

Bryan Cranston defended playing a quadriplegic in his upcoming movie “The Upside,” saying taking on the role was a “business decision” amid the growing debate about expanding casting in Hollywood.

Cranston told the Press Association that he’s aware of “the need to expand opportunities” to others when it comes to casting specific roles, but as an actor, he has the right to take on characters with different attributes and abilities. In “The Upside,” Cranston plays a wealthy quadriplegic who hires a caretaker, played by Kevin Hart, to help him on his daily routine.

"We live in the world of criticism, if we're willing to get up and try something, we have to also be willing to take criticism,” Cranston said, according to Sky News. “We're very aware of the need to expand the opportunities for people with disabilities.”

"As actors, we're asked to be other people, to play other people,” he added. “If I, as a straight, older person, and I'm wealthy, I'm very fortunate, does that mean I can't play a person who is not wealthy, does that mean I can't play a homosexual?”

Apparently some people don't understand the entire point of "acting." Cranston also didn't really have cancer or sell Chrystal meth either.

I think this is a great concept, and Cranston should not be criticized for this role.

Yes. He’s an actor, and a mighty good one at that.
This is what actors DO. They pretend to be people they’re not.

As far as I'm concerned, he can put on blackface and play Aunt Jemima.

I would so go see that movie!

I have wondered whether or not anyone would ever go after Lin Manuela-Miranda for Cultural Appropriation, in light of his using only minority actors to represent the White Founding Fathers. And then, when advertising for replacement actors in the NYT, specifying that only minorities would be considered. BREATHTAKING DOUBLE STANDARD??

John Wayne asked Charlton Heston how he could play a gay guy. Heston said, “It’s called acting, John. You should try it.”

It’s called acting.

I suppose it’s not PC for somebody to play a psychotic murderer. They would need to actually hire a psychotic murderer. (Hey, on second thought, I like that.)

It is a shame about this movie. The original is great. It is French. Funny, poignant, sad. Just perfect. Kevin Hart is a buffoon.

I love Heston-—famous guy to be sure, but still underrated, and mocked for years. And then of course there was that NRA thing which got him more criticism

Hell yes! And why do they let all those ordinary people play superheroes? Only someone from Krypton should play Superman.

My god... So you`re saying he doesn’t know how to make meth? What have I been smoking?

On a serious note though, the good news is... There will be no need for Sean Penn to apologize for playing a mentally challenged man in ‘I am Sam’, and there will also be no need for him to apologize for playing a ‘stoner’ in “Fast Times at Ridgemont High”... Because he is a mentally challenged stoner.

His next part playing an abusive husband will also be guilt free.

I think most of those actors ARE from Uranus.

Yes, wife and I saw the original , called “The Intouchables”, whilch was great, and infinitely more subtle than this lame remake looks, considering the trailers playing on TV now....and the French actor playing the quadriplegic looked like a French version of Dustin Hoffman.

LOL!!!! I love Chuck! I wonder if he ever played a gay character in a movie. Can’t think of anything.

Before Chuck was spokesman for the NRA and a conservative Republican, he marched with Martin Luther King when it wasn’t “cool” to do so.

What a wonderful man!! I miss him.

If the SAG was asked to send a list of quadriplegic actors to a studio for auditions, how long would that list be?

Hollyweird will get consumed by its own Political Correctness.

It will get so bad that only homosexuals will be allowed to play homosexuals, only Latinos will be allowed to play Latinos, only Chinese will be allowed to play Chinese, only paraplegics will be allowed to play paraplegics, only blind will be allowed to play blind, etc, etc, etc.................

I’m SURE the movie is about a black man teaching lessons to a white man about how to be better.

Even if that white man is a ... captive audience, we’ll say.

The reality is that most of these home health aides ARE black, usually islanders who do a lot of stealing and abusing. I’ve interacted with this sort of thing too many times throughout my life.

Hiring a real quadriplegic for the role would cost an arm and a leg.
