A Federalist Remembrance Of Bre Payton, Our Colleague And Friend
The Federalist ^ | December 29, 2018 | Ben Domenech

Posted on 12/29/2018 12:20:21 PM PST by Tolerance Sucks Rocks

I hired Bre Payton right out of college. She was green. She was unknown. She had never done TV. But she had worked through her last year of college, and I respected that. I interviewed a half-dozen people for the position. We met in the coffee shop I liked that had no seats, so we were by ourselves in crappy plastic chairs in the back.

From the moment we started talking I realized she was a potential star. She was raw, yes, but that could be honed. She was eager to learn, to write, and to go places—not because of ambition, but because she wanted to change the world. She was confident. She was sarcastic. She was cutting. But she was also sweet.

I’ll save the more personal stuff for when there’s a memorial for Bre in DC. But for now I’ll share the professional stuff. Bre Payton was one of the hardest-working young women I have ever met. She seized on things. Volunteered. Noticed the details. Never avoided an uncomfortable confrontation. She was self-deprecating on occasion, but never hesitant. The daughter of a manufacturer from California, she had the California girl accent and the occasional space cadet air, but the rest of her was all confidence.

Looking back at her texts, it took her almost a year to say, “I think I finally had a good hit.” It was less than a year later that she told another friend that being on TV is easy. “Just imagine you’re Beyonce.”

Is there any medical reason being given for her death? I have not seen anything yet myself. I lost a very dear friend and co-worker years ago to a ruptured brain aneurism. His death was very fast.

H1N1 is Swine Flu.

Really is shocking. Healthy just 3 days ago.

Thanks to you both for the information. Flu shots seem to be a mixed blessing at best ( and we do not know whether or not Bre had been given one). From what I have seen, each year, they are a medical crap shoot based on what type of flu strain(s) will be prevalent in the coming flu season. So you get the shot, have to worry that the shot itself may possibly cause you a lasting medical problem, and that it may not even protect you from the flu strains that actually occur.

I’m a cancer survivor, and according to modern medicine, cancers are not considered cured nowadays, but merely dormant, and a major illness can trigger a recurrence. So I started getting flu shots in 2015 or 2016 and have been getting them since, so that I can lessen my chance of getting the flu. Otherwise, I wouldn’t bother getting them unless I was already a senior citizen.

I doubt that Ms. Payton got a flu shot. She was a young, healthy, conservative woman who I seriously doubt would pay much heed to the Big Pharma/Crony Capitalist “Flu Vaccines for Everybody” pitch.

meningitis can be fatal. Often confused with the Flu. Sometimes you get with the flu!

May Bre’s Memory be Eternal!!!! I did not even know who she was until I saw the tributes on Twitter yesterday. This is a great loss.

Some years ago, I got a very bad case of the flu.

Since then I have been MADE to get the flu shot. I have never been sick with the flu since, even last year when many people who got the vaccine got the flu anyway.

The advice that nearly everyone beyond infancy should get the flu shot (unless you have certain medical conditions) is generally a good one. Trust me—I know!

Flu vaccines probably don’t do much harm and may do some good, but they’re not fool proof. They’re based on a projection of the next year’s flu season, since flu viruses mutate and every year is different. That said, if you do get any flu, that year’s flu vaccine probably lessens the severity.

However, to my knowledge, they didn’t have anything very effective against swine flu, which had a major outbreak a few years ago. Swine Flu is extremely dangerous, not only for its possible follow up infections but in itself, and was noted for being extremely dangerous to young, healthy people.

It comes from China. Not accusing China of having poisoned this young woman, simply saying that we should be on alert for this virus if it’s reappearing.

“Since I turned 60 I’ve gotten the flu shot every year so far not gotten sick from flu!”

You don’t say how many years that has been, but I am 78 and neither me nor my wife has ever had a flu shot. Our now 46 year old son had one three or four years ago and the end result was that he had to be hospitalized. The injection site on his upper arm swelled up and looked as though it was infected. He was in the hospital several days having it treated. I guess as they say, “you pays your money and you takes your chances!” I do think that going to places where there are large gatherings of people in close quarters enhances your chances of getting all of the communicable diseases, and here in CA with lots of illegals who have no long-term medical history makes the issue of all diseases a lot more problematic. So stay out of the mall and stay out of the theater, and thanks to home shopping and cable TV you don’t have to do either. Besides you can screw two groups by so doing: 1). You don’t fund the Hollywierd crowd and 2). You can avoid a lot of sales tax to the State. I try to not purchase anything on-line from a vendor that has to collect California Sales Tax, and the funny thing now they are figuring out how to “put your order” on an out of state seller in order to give CA residents tax-free purchases.

She didn't pull punches and had a good sense of history to back up her statements.

I think what would be of more benefit to the elderly and young, and otherwise healthy people, is if they do get the flu, to immediately give them antihistimines. The bad flu strains cause a big reaction by the immune system, cytokine storms, etc and that pretty much takes the person out. A strong dose of antihistamines would stop the immune system overreacion that kills the person and allow the immune system to function and still start attacking the flu.
