FULL TITLE: 'My credibility is sort of shot': Former NASA engineer behind the viral YouTube glitter-bomb video admits some of it was faked

It is one of the viral videos of the year, but elements of it were unwittingly faked.

That's the admission of Mark Rober, the former NASA engineer who built a glitter bomb package that explodes after it has been stolen from a front porch.

The YouTube sensation has more than 40 million views, but three days after being posted, Rober said elements of the prank section of the video were not as they seemed.

Much of the video focuses on Rober creating the package, but the payoff comes towards the end, when he secretly records it in action in the hands of unsuspecting thieves.

Thieves are now guaranteed that any box on the NASA guy’s porch are “safe”.

I was suspicious when the faces of the perps were obscured. I could not think of one good reason that the identity of the thieves should be protected.

I thought it was hilarious. I don’t care if he had some friends help him.

Putting 4 smart phones inside wiped me off.
Why give away 4 phones glitter or no glitter

I saw the video a few days back. I was amused and impressed.
At the same time, I thought maybe there were just too many intricate parts for the average consumer to set up properly without mishap. Can you imagine setting the alarm, then having it go off in your living room and in your face?
Now you have a living room heavy with artificial fart gases.

It wasn’t practical for mass production, but still a good idea in some conditions. Some folks don’t even like putting
IKEA furniture together from the box. Those people won’t wish to deal with this alarm box.

Yeah well, it would be better if he was honest about it instead of pulling our leg.

Who cares?

It was merely an illustration of operation.

That they weren't actual "thieves" is of no concern.

Never believe anything you see on YouTube. You’ll be right far more often than you’re wrong.

I admire the guy’s engineering talent while I myself am relegated to dog poop in the box.

More like wittingly. It was mysterious to me that he got it to work multiple times and managed to recover it each time.

Yeah, I thought something was wrong with it when I first saw it... like the overly long introduction where he went on and on and on about his oh-so-important indispensable role landing the most advanced spacecraft in the world on alien worlds. For such a young guy! Okay, okay, if true he definitely has bragging rights. But my eyes were beginning to glaze over.

And in that whole thing, did he ever mention the word 'former?' And why in the world would you ever give up that job for another job in engineering? What, he found designing shower curtain hanger thingies more interesting???

it was clickbait, had a sponsored ad on it, and it generated 25,000,000 youtube clicks in a week.

As if crooks are going to throw away 4 cellphones or not at least smash the phones in anger.
